The Buckeye Thread

Good post Poltroon. Everyone has barn blindness to some degree.....everyone! And yes....how your birds look at home is not usually how they will look in a show. It is best to train them to the show cages and take that time to really look at them and how they behave. I watch a bird move before I take them out of the cage. Some judges don't care how they move, but a good judge will be sure that they take note of the birds movement. I will say that hardly any judges know Buckeyes, but good judges will look in their Standard to see what they are supposed to look like. I have said this before.....if you really care about the breed, present it in the best light. One of the ways to do that is to not care what other clubs or individuals are saying, doing etc. Take the time used for that to educate judges. Talk to judges as much as you can and point out the different qualities that you know judges overlook. It is PR just as if you were pushing a business or anything else for that matter.
Judges just don't see enough GOOD Buckeyes to know what they should look like or the color they should be. There are some breed clubs that do a fantastic job of educating the public and the judges about the qualities of their breed.........most not so much.

Excellent point Walt, judges aren't seeing enough good buckeyes. I talk to judges on a regular basis and am hearing quite a bit. Most notable that the overal size of the birds are coming along nicely but the color, the head structures, and the excess body fluff need much improvement. Heck, I got critized for not having dark enough buckeyes this year?!?! That was music to my ears because many judges are realizing and wanting dark birds......I'll happily oblige :) I talk to as many judges as I can and they are always happy to chat. My club has had a number of judges stop by to chat about the birds and they thank us for the insights.....there are some great things to come from this breed!

Penned up a great prospect. He's 5 months old, give or take a week and weighs exactly 7 lbs. Strong mahogany color with a two inch wide bar of slate for undercolor. Come December, He should be looking pretty nice. Had a great cockerel year with many excellent pullets.

A couple pics of one of this years pullets. She is 6 1/2 months old weighs just under 6 lbs. I made several just like her. She carries her tail just a touch higher but due to her being so active, I'll get the pics where I can get them. :) she has GREAT undercolor, good comb, wide skull and a long back for optimum egg production. Notice ......NO fluff in the thighs and saddle.

All I can say is WOW. Those bantams were lovely and now this? You've outdone yourself this year, Joe

They are stunning! Didn't you say something about judges wanting to see darker birds? I think these guys should make them happy

I'd love to see these two in the sun.

Thanks Sumi!! Just getting ready for the Ohio Nationals!!! Last year I got flack for being afraid. But after seeing what was actually there, I should have just went instead of taking the rest of the fall off after a great showing in Lucasville. Lesson learned....no rest for the weary. I've got a great bunch of males and females.....lets put them to the test ;)

And this girl will give the boys a run for their money. ;-)

Nice crop of birds this year Joe. Quite impressed with your breeding capabilities.
