I got button quail at an auction about 2 months ago and didn't expect much. I got kind of annoyed after a week or two because they were skittish, escape artists (started with seven now five, they got out then chilled), and took longer to mature than expected. I got chicks and couldn't tell their age, but finally on Friday got my first two eggs!
They were also in with a chicken I THOUGHT had salmonella pullorum, but no, tested negative. Because of that, I didn't pay too much attention to them. But after the chicken was negative, I decided I could start a decent colony. Was thinking about building a nice, natural structure for them if anyone wants to put that in here. Anybody can share any info about them.

I had button quail one time for a short period... They're too crazy for me.

I believe you need to keep your groups small.
No more than one male per group.
Do Your housing plans include multiple cages so you can keep the group's separate?

Button quail do best in pairs. An aviary setting works well for them, but keep in mind that they come from SE Asia where it doesn't get very cold. They're not cold hardy, so if you plan to keep them outside, they should have heat available.

Unless you spend a LOT of time with them, they're going to be mostly wild. They are very pretty to look at, however.

I have a pair of buttons. They are really adorable and pretty to look at. But however, they are wild. I get about 1egg per day sometimes less. They are pretty much just pets but the size is a wow factor in a sort of way. I keep them in a big bow front fish tank (40-60 gal) we use wood chips as bedding, a chick feeder and waterer, some fish tank decor, and tada! They live a pretty cushy life since we their tank is also multi-leveled,( we used a large decor item to keep the chips more on one side than the other) and we offer all of the optional supplements. That’s what I do but if your looking at it with more of an egg production value then a splitting them into pairs into several 10 gallon tanks with food, water, a piece or two of decor can suffice.

Figured I’d jump in on this thread and ask if anyone here is particularly good at identifying button quail mutations....Would love some help with a few that are more unusual than the typical wild type, golden pearl, red breasted, etc. I haven’t been having any luck getting help beyond the basics.

@Ravenlover has a book with a ton of pictures I think.
