The Calico/Aloha/Mottled Naked Neck Thread

Remember my "is she mottled?" pullet? Took pictures of her yesterday.. the pictures came out way overexposed but I no longer believe she might be mottled. The white looking feathers actually are a much lighter shade of tan, not white as it might seem in picture:



Was supposed to be pullet only chicks at the feed store but got this boy- am happy to get a hatchery stock cockerel again... but his coloring turned out to be a very colorful surprise. Definitely not mottled though.

I wouldn't discount him carrying mottling though. That is similar to what someone told me was a split of Dominant White and Wheaten. Could be carrying Columbian also. Yes I remember the pullet. Even though she's not mottled she is pretty.

I don't know the cause, but I can tell you if you want it, use RED solid NN's to get it.

Color howed up easily after an infusion of New Hamspshire Red.

Breeds easily!

+1 on that - it looks like there is a Speckled Sussex influence on these. I hold you ALL personably responsible for my acquisition of 5 Speckled Sussex pullets from the feed store, now 6 weeks old (against my better judgement regarding number of birds already on hand). Per some other comments, I was planning to give them one of my red NN cockerels to work toward the Aloha look. Any other additional tips on leveraging my SS girls? (Who I call "crazies" which gives you an idea of their behavior patterns in the brooder... Those are some tough girls...)

My friend Debi in Tucson came up to Phoenix last summer, and I gave her some NN babies to raise.

+1 on that - it looks like there is a Speckled Sussex influence on these. Did you mean wild or aggressive?

If you're wanting the lighter base color, choose lighter roosters- more orange than red. That's because the SS have genes that turn the buff into a deep red... so using a red rooster(assuming he isn't the darker masculine version of buff hens) you run the risk of creating very red mottles later on. If that;s your preference then this will work great...

I'm only saying this because it seems to me the Aloha ideal is a lighter buff bird with mottles instead of darker red... am I wrong?

I just meant they are a handful. Not really aggressive.

This helps - Mouse is the lightest of the red boys I have, so he would indeed be better, I suppose.

(I looked up the chicken genetics. Read almost all the way through, Got one heck of a headache. I guess I need to read it multiple times...)

Edit to add: Do you mean that the SS have Mahogany (red enhancer)?

Kev, Puppy's coloring has been evolving - look at this photo of her from yesterday - looks the same black distribution on the feather as your cockerel above, but with a different ground color (am I using that terminology correctly?) Remind me again - do we know what this is? (I'm also posting an updated photo of Apoc, Wheaten yellow-downed boy with dark feathers, for completeness' sake.)
