The Chicken Conversation Thread!

Last night was the first night our girls got to feel what it is like to sleep in freezing temps, (we live in KS). Well, they would have gotten to feel the cold. Instead, I did yesterday what I had been meaning to do since I built the coop. I ran electricity to it and plugged in a brooder lamp for heat and set it on a timer. Also, it is secured three different ways to the coop so there is virtually no way it can fall into the wood chips on the floor and start a fire. I was concerned a heat lamp bulb would be a little much and knew the girls just needed to have the edge taken off the cold so I just used a 100 watt bulb instead. The light came on at sundown and stayed on till about 9:30 then it came on for thirty minutes every hour and a half until about 5:30 this morning when it came on and remained on till the sun was fully warming their run at about 9:am.

Haha, yay me! Small victories make me smile. :)

(I'm in Chase County KS) I did the same thing yesterday. But our coop is so big I had to do 3 lamps and I still need to get a few more for when it gets really cold, but we'll be fine until December probably....

Probably, haha, you never know around here it seems. Is Cottonwood Falls the seat of Chase county? I bicycle through there once a year on a big tour that overnights there. Nice town! Nice county all around!!!

I got three new chicks!!!

I thought my Dark Cornish girly had been dead for a few weeks, but I went out to the barn for a roll of chicken wire and lo and behold, there she is in a cardboard box with three chicks in a nest made of drop cloths.
That is great! Congrats on the new babies!

After years of talking about getting chickens my husband and I finally got our first flock. We enjoy them so much and spend a lot of time just sitting outside watching their antics. I really wish we had gotten them years ago. Our first five girls are now two months old and we have four new babies in the brooder.

Does, um, does anyone else want to share some chicken tales? Maybe some pics? I have a tale myself that I could tell.

Ok.

Late last night-- or I guess you could say early this morning-- at 3:30 in the morning, I heard our rooster, Brewster crow. I knew that something had to be wrong. I have always been very, very afraid of what lurks in the dark. But I knew that my chickens were in possible danger. So, I got the B.B gun, loaded it, pumped it up hard, and went out to the coop. I shined the flashlight into the coop. Nothing! *A sigh of relief* Then, the light catches on two eyes. A cat! It was crouching over my fav. hen Sunshine! "Hey, leave her alone!" I yelled. The cat jumped and ran for the small chicken door. Instead, it hit the wall. Dazed it sat there for a second. That was all I needed. I shot the cat right in the butt! He ran into the chicken pen, and sat there for a second, again. I shot it in the butt again! Finally, it just took off. What was crazy was I did all this with my hands shaking like 9.2 earthquakes.

The best part is, I conquered my biggest fear out of love for my chickens. They all got extra treats today, especially Brewster.
