Barbara Junior is Here!

Twelve little babies awakened from their eggs in the incubator since yesterday. There are several bantam cochins, some BLRWs and one Barbara! Mrs. Chickendad purchased some barred rock eggs from a well-known breeder a few weeks ago, and the post office apparently drop kicked them all the way from Ohio and the air cells were damaged. She is going to try again as soon as more are available.

In the meantime, the baby seems to be a female, with black on her shanks and a small white spot on her head. So Barbara Junior she shall be until she proves otherwise. Her first portrait shall be posted as soon as she is able to go to the brooder with her step-brothers and sisters.

Ten other babies have awakened and pecked spy holes in their shells so they can see what all the mad peeping is about. The older babies in the Brooder In the Other Basement Room are getting a bit crowded and noisy, so the Chickendads just open the clothes chute upstairs when they need to check on them and they can hear if there are any cries of distress, or they can holler at the babies that it is “time for bed—go to sleep!”

The Adventures of Baby Barbara

Baby Barbara has been moved into the big aquarium, her first stop on her brooder journey. She will stay there with her hatchmates for about a week. This is where she learns to eat and drink and look out at the world. She naps a lot under the warm red light snuggled up to her buddies, even though some of them are much smaller than she is and she tends to tromp on them with her big feet. Their fuzzy feet help keep her warm, too.

Mrs. Chickendad was cleaning the babies aquarium when she noticed the egg turner in one of the incubators was very noisy. It was thumping and bumping something awful.

“Rats!” thought Mrs. Chickendad, “that’s a brand new turner, it shouldn’t be broken already!”

She looked inside to see the problem and saw a sweet little face looking back at her thru the window. A sweet little Rhode Island Red chick was rocking back and forth on the turner. He was all fluffed out and was apparently getting a little seasick as he was starting to peep. She fished him out, along with his shell, clearly marked Hatch #5 (the current one), feeling a bit guilty for leaving him behind. He welcomed a drink and some companionship with the others and immediately paired up with Baby Barbara.
