Some long-overdue updates!
The good news first: my littles are all doing well, Victoria has some trouble roosting, but gets there in the end, and Jamie has a new home to go to in about a month where he will have his own coop and run with 4 lady friends.
Nardole the Brave remains my perfect golden boy, and is officially a year old as of February!
My big girls are all molting, so not getting many eggs right now, but that's ok.
Now onto the bad news: Rory is no more. I went on vacation, and he gave my chicken sitter some trouble, to the point she needed to lock him out of the coop to feed and water everyone. When I came home, he challenged me once, which I corrected, and the second I turned my back he attacked me, drawing blood through my heavy barn pants.
That is unacceptable behavior to me. There are no second chances after a vicious sneak attack. He is now soup, and no one misses him.
The lady who is taking Jamie has a lavender orpington x black sex link rooster she is dying to find a good home for, so we may do a rooster swap, I'll see what he looks like when I get there.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed. I REALLY wanted to cross him over my wyandottes next year for some fun color combinations, but nothing spoils the fun of pet chickens quite like a mean roo.It is great to see the flock again especially my hero Nardole. Tough to hear about Rory but rules are rules. I'm glad the newbies have recovered. You did a great job taking care of them afterwards and they are very pretty birds.

He's always been a bit rough with the hens and a jerk in general, but I tried to remember I was comparing him to my unrealistically perfect Nardy boy and cut him some slack, but a deliberate attack on a human is always where the line was drawn, and he crossed it with a vengeance.
The hens don't miss him. Susan has become quite bossy in his absence lol.
That last picture is PERFECT for March ... Dr. Seuss's birthday ... it's Mrs. TOUCANELLA!Some long-overdue updates!

Honestly, it's fine. Susan is bossy, but consistent and fair. She's not a bully, just expects everyone to get out of her way at once and let her have first choice in food, water and treats. She does not hoard resources, just uses them and then moves on. She also kept Rory pretty well in line. She an old previously feral hen, and has a firm grasp on proper flock structure.A power vacuum is always filled. Someone must be in charge.
Lol, that's Jamie growing in his headdress. He looks absolutely absurd. That last picture is PERFECT for March ... Dr. Seuss's birthday ... it's Mrs. TOUCANELLA!
