I might bring a box with bedding and heat lamp for when the chicks aren't being handled. How exciting, Pippin!
I disagree with the posts about shielding the chicks from the classroom noise and activity. Chicks are like puppies, in that the more you socialise them with lots of different sights, sounds and experiences, the less fazed they will be about them. These chicks, if they spend any amount of time in the classroom will grow up to be extremely tolerant and relaxed around kids. Same with vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers, TV, traffic noise, etc. You don't want to protect them from any of this, you need to expose them to it.
Touching is another matter. Only allow limited and highly supervised by adult touching/holding, because kids can squeeze and drop.
Are you going to set up a brooder in the classroom? I didn't quite get the pre and post half term arrangement.
That's good. She will know to not let the kids have general access to them.I might bring a box with bedding and heat lamp for when the chicks aren't being handled.
The teacher has loads of experience with class hatches witn young kids so she knows more than me in this case.
Yeah. A while ago when I had chicks in school, the chick box was at the front and 3-6 kids were called to the front, held the chicks for around 2 minutes and then were sent backThat's good. She will know to not let the kids have general access to them.
My son's school just did a classroom hatch. They invited his class in to hold the chicks in little groups of 4 children. Of course my son was like, "yeah we have chicks all the time at my house" and was bossing about the other kids and showing them how to cup their hands around the chicks so they have a little hand cage and can't jump out but they aren't being squeezed. I think he loved that!![]()
