~The Council Of Youngers of BYC! (COY)~

It's a bit of a generalization to say that all dubbing is cruel. When you live in a place that drops to extreme subzero temps like where I live, in some instances it's actually cruel to not dub your rooster's combs, because they can get frostbite.

:thumbsup I was thinking just the same thing. Heated coops are not always a good alternative either, posing a fire hazard and not letting the hens acclimate to the cold, which can kill them if there's a power outage.

Let me just get this clear for everyone because I feel kinda bad. There is nothing wrong with newbies! I love newbies and oldies alike!

It's just different because the oldies remember the old times when BYC was different so there's a different connection. I have nothing against newbies, or squirrels for that matter, @Gerbil .

@ilovemysilkie , yes you would be considered a newbie but there's nothing wrong with that.

Your avatar is snazzy!

I'm a newbie? I've been here for almost a year.

I still consider you to be a newbie.

@Spock, I think that GJF doesn't have it because there are fewer serious discussions here and it could quickly become a popularity contest. Not sure, though, as RR has it.

IMO, neither of you are newbies! Having gone past 5,000 posts has given you enough insight on BYC's inner workings for you not to be considered as such! :th I can't disagree that there is a slight rift between newer and older members due to that previous connection, but that doesn't mean they're newbies either. Oddly enough, it seems a good amount of post-1/2012 folks have looked into the past threads and are more familiar with this.
Come to think of it, us 'oldies'(*shudder*) could be considered newbies by some as well. Has anyone checked out the OLD forum? As in the Yuku-based BYC?

@eenie Perhaps, but it could easily be turned into a popularity contest elsewhere. As people get more and more used to the thumbs up button, it isn't just limited to 'helpful'. Although I must admit, those those who know enough to be elected for the Educator badge get a ridiculous amount of ovations for the information they give.

However, not one of us will ever achieve the status of BYC expert like you.

What's the matter, can you not handle the idea of being OLD? XD

There's only so much the staff can control, though.

I'm only an expert of the old format, not the workings of this one. No.... I can't handle it. You do realize that I'll forever be labeled once I get the fourth year badge? It doesn't come off! o.o.... And then the year after that...and so on.... I might even temporarily decide to change my avatar that day. The only consolation is that the admins are like 3-4 weeks behind on age badges. :p

Indeed, but the staff controlling whether the thumbsups are reasonable or not is not what I meant. It's just quickly loosing it's distinctivness among everything else.
