The coyotes are here again...

The coyotes are here again. That is all. I have a love hate relationship with them. I have heard them almost every night this week. I just went out to bring the ducks a treat and there was a coyote at the end of the driveway about 30 feet from my coops. I chased her off and not 5 minutes later heard the rest of the pack freaking out. All the animals are on the move now that the seasons are changing and the pack is back in the neighborhood.

Can you put an electric fence around the run or the coop?

I have not heard the raccoons in a week or so, so I wonder if coyotes are coming back to the area here too. I have not heard them recently.

They seem to come in cycles. I will see or hear them regularly for a few weeks and then they will all be gone for a few weeks. I suspect now that it's hunting season and deer and elk are going into rut that all the animals are moving.

Ordinances prohibit electric fence, but if it was just around the coops and not a property perimeter fence I doubt anyone would care.

Same here with the cycles. I tend to hear babies when snow is on the ground which means they were born in the fall. I do not know if that is normal? I know the electric fence works on large dogs, so it should work with coyotes. The dsy time might be an issue though. I see them more during the day then night a lot.

Meeee too. They usually just pass through and are a non-issue (other than stressing me and my animals out), but once in awhile there will be a particularly bold one. Everyone was alive and well this morning.

In some areas it is against the law to use an electric fence mostly because a short caused by high grass or weeds can result in a wildfire started by a spark jumping from a hot wire to ground. These laws are usually enacted in arid regions. I think that Colorado qualifies as an arid region. An electric fence without grass or weeds surrounding it is inherently safe or at least safer than an electric fence surrounding large areas of land. This is mostly because of the more or less constant human observation that goes with small runs of electric fence around chicken coops etc..

We have coyotes here too. We just recently had one dig under the wire we had around the coop and move several cinderblocks to get a chicken. So I countered by running and electric fence around the coop and run.

Animals learn quite quickly to avoid the wire. We have an electric fence around our dog yard as we have an escape artist and 2 diggers. We really only have to turn it on once in a while to remind them it is there. One zap and they avoid the wire for months again.

I am surprised that in some places electric fences are illegal. I have never heard of one starting a fire. I have electric around my coops and pens and have for many years after loosing some birds to predators. TSC and other places like Home Depot sell them. I haven't had a loss in a very long time.
