"The day my world turned upside down" story

Suddenly a orange chicken jumped down from a tree, right in my path. We slammed together, tumbling, head over paws, down a grassy hill. When we finally were at the bottom, I landed on my back and before I could move… the chicken jumped right on my belly. “Stop! We mean not to hurt you. We want to help you.” He clucked. “Help me? Your hens were all after me!” I growled. He flew off of me and clucked “They were just protecting their young… now why don’t you smarten up and…..” Suddenly he froze… than took off towards the other chickens. I sniffed the air and something indeed was coming. I looked behind me…. “ROOOOOAAR!!” a HUGE black bear came galloping out of the forest on the opposite side of the field. If I hadn’t of been injured, I would of stood and fought…. But…… “YIPE YIPE YIPEE!!!!” I took of screeching! I passed a tree and saw the chicken that I talked too up there watching me run away. How undignified, I thought to myself. I should be fighting that dumb, lazy….. “BEAAARR!!!!!!” the orange chicken screeched from the tree! I turned around and saw him standing on 2 feet, hovering over me. With one swipe of his paw, he threw me to the ground. When suddenly….

Clucking….squawking and screeching filled the air! “GET ‘IM LADIES!” I heard a hen squawk. Suddenly the bear was mauled by chickens, roosters, and even the chickens pecked at his feet! I lied on the ground, howling with laughter, as I watched the bear roar in surprise. At first, he tried to push them all away or bite them, but the hens were too quick for him. Finally he got on all fours and ran away. All the hens watched as he left, then turned to me. My eyes turned into saucers, “Um…. I’m on your side, right?” I whispered nervously. The hens ignored my question, pushing by me heading back towards their home. All but the golden chicken that I first met left. I realized he was a rooster, which I didn’t understand how there could be 2 roosters in one flock…. But hey, that’s not my problem.
“Happy now? Ya’ll needed us to save you skins before you believed we were on your side.” He grumbled. “Sorry.” I mumbled.
He strutted away and soon, I followed. Back at camp, I observed all the chickens. The hens were all different colors, black, red, gold, white, grey and some had all different patterns and colors. Most of the chicks were yellow or black. The 2 roosters stayed far apart, the gold rooster and a black rooster. Both kept watch of the chicks and hens. The black one kept trying to mount the hens, but the gold rooster respected the hens, offering to help and encouraging them. Some hens were laying eggs in the tall grass, others searched for food, some were the chick-sitters and some even preened others feathers! Dusk fell, and all the hens bedded down, making nests and letting the chicks under their warm feathers. I had a short coat, for I was a short haired terrier…. I shivered from the cold winter air. The gold rooster suddenly beckoned to me to come near. “Come lay with me.” He said…. It sounded more of a order than a question. I obeyed and lied down next to him, warmed immediately by his heat. As I fell asleep listening to the soft chirps of chicks and the small purring of the hens, I thought about my master. How I missed my warm fires with cozy beds, that gentle hand that always scratched my head before bed and what I missed most was…. The warm, homey feeling of our log cabin. It was, and forever will be, the only home I will ever come to love. Or so I thought.

As I woke up from the first peaceful sleep since I was with my master, my bed was empty. The golden rooster was gone! I got up and ran to one of the hens. “Where’s the golden rooster?!” The hen looked around, then squawked a warning to the other chickens. I heard the black rooster mumble “Its about time he found out he’s not wanted here.” I growled at him. “He is wanted here!” “How do you know, mutt? You’ve only been here for 1 day!” he said coldly.
I ran away from him and put my nose to the ground, looking for his scent. I smelled rabbit, hawk, fox… a cat and….. the rooster! I followed his trail all the way to a river. I spotted a raccoon chewing away at something gold in color. “No. No! NO!” I howled. I ran over to the raccoon, growling and barking, my hair on my back bristling. The raccoon ran away, and I saw, laying on the ground, a dead chicken. I whimpered and lay down next to the motionless body. For the short time I knew him, he was like a best friend. I cried. My master was gone, the Gold rooster was gone. “I never even knew his name!” I whimpered mournfully.

“What are you doing lying next to that dead animal? That’s unsanitary!” I heard a voice ask. I opened my tear filled eyes. The gold rooster! “YOU”RE ALIVE!” I yipped happily. I ran around him in circles, barking happily. “Where’d you think I…..” he started, but paused when he saw what the dead animal was. He ran over to it clucking as he went. He stared at the body a long time. “Goldie? You okay?” I whispered. “I let her down. I let my flock down.” He clucked softly. “I know how it feels. I….I let my master down. I could of saved him… somehow, but I didn’t. He’s dead.” I whimpered. “Wait, what did you call me a minute ago?” he suddenly asked. “Goldie.” I replied. “I’ve never had a name. I’ve always been ‘The rooster’ or ‘gold rooster’. The other rooster has a name….Cole.” he said slowly.
“Well…. I now have a best friend, and you have a name. You did all you could for the hen. I love you anyways.” I said softly.
