Quick as lightning, I pushed Goldie and the hunting dog out of the way and got halfway out of the trucks path, but one of the wheels rolled over my leg. OWWWWEEEE!!! I howled. Buddy! Are you okay?! the hunting dog asked. DO I LOOK OKAY?! I growled at him. Sorry he said softly. Okay, we NEED to think of a name for you. I said. How about Fido? Sounds good to me! he woofed. So, amazingly, Fido put me on his back as well as goldie and trotted down the road on the sidewalk this time. We found the vet office, finally. Fido layed us at the door and then scratched the glass. He dove behind the bushes as the door opened and a kind man appeared. Hello? Who . He started, but stopped when he saw me and Goldie lying on the rug by his feet. He quickly scooped us up and brought us inside. For many days I lied in a warm cage with a blanket, food and water always available and many kind people to pat and love me. They often gave me shots I did NOT like shots. My leg was bandaged as well. Goldie was never in the same room as me, so I didnt know if he was okay or not. As the days grew colder, I grew older. It had to be my 7th or 8th winter. On the 9th day at the vet, something horrible happened. From the cage I was in, I could see the waiting room. I watched as the same 2 men who killed my master and hurt my paw walked in. I growled and started barking frantically. I stopped to listen to their conversation. Were looking for the mutt . I mean dog, thats paw got run over by a truck. We wanna adopt im. He said, trying to sound happy and smiling. No! They might I dont know whatd they do to me . Kill me, beat me
You cannot have him! You are the guys who ran him over! the vet said, angry. The men gave her a dirty look and walked out. Jimmy plucked a cigarette from his mouth and casually dropped it in a basket of straw with pumpkins in it. I barked and howled and tried to warn them, but nobody cared! The straw suddenly burst into flames! Everyone ran around yelling and screaming, and they all left the building! WAIT! DONT LEAVE US ALL IN HERE! I barked. Smoke filled the room, ashes filled the air, fire alarms went off . It was all too much . And I was locked in a cage, no way to get out.
When all hope was lost, its always good to pray. Oh please, God! Dont let us die this way. I whimpered. Suddenly, through the smoke, a figure appeared. Are .are you a angel? I whispered softly. No, Im fido you lucky dog! Fido laughed. Fido! Uh the smoke makes me high strung and loopy. I stammered. Enough chatter! Lets free these animals and get outta here before we turn into hot dogs! he exclaimed. We rushed around the rooms, pulling the cages open with our teeth. The smoke grew and wood started to fall from the ceiling! Cmon we have everyone! Fido barked. Wait, wheres Goldie?! I barked frantically! We searched and searched but all the cages were empty. We cant stay, Buddy! This place is coming down. He barked. But I started, but before I could say anything I heard a faint cluck . Goldie!!! I barked! Fido pulled my collar, We must go! He pulled me out of the building just as the roof collapsed in the lobby area. The kennel area is still there! Let me go inside and get him! I growled at Fido. Before he could reply, I darted inside through a broken window. YIP! I had stepped in the broken glass! It hurt, but my heart hurt for Goldie. I ran on, through all the rooms, barking for Goldie. I saw something Gold in a carrier on a table. Goldie! I said, relieved. He clucked excitedly as I opened the cage. Buddy! You saved me! Not yet! Cmon! I barked. We walked blindly through the smoke and fire, I panted and my paws hurt from the glass pressing in them, but I kept going. At the broken window I picked Goldie up carefully in my mouth and dropped him out the window. I was just about to jump out when . The window collapsed and blocked my only exit.
