My eyes full of terror, I turned around and round, but fire and smoke enclosed in on me. My eyes burned and I panted from hotness and from nervousness. As long as all the other pets were safe, I could die and feel like I am not needed by anyone anymore. My master was gone, and Goldie probably will soon forget about me and go back to his flock. Fido will find a new home, and then where will I go? Probably to a animal shelter, to sit in a cage for weeks upon weeks. “I’m not needed anymore.” I whimpered. Smoke filled the room, and I passed out.
“Bu……bud…..buddddy?” I heard a faint voice from my sleep. I slowly opened my eyes. I had a oxygen tank over my nose and I was outside, in the cool, fresh air, with my 2 friends surrounding me, Fido and Goldie. “Wh….what happened?” I stammered. “Fido went in and found you passed out, so he brought you out!” Goldie clucked excitedly. I looked at Fido with thankfulness in my eyes. A human walked over to my cage, opened it and took off my oxygen tank. “We’re taking you guys to a shelter.” She told us. “Guys, we can’t go there again! We’ll never get adopted.” I said nervously as I darted through her arms and ran away with Goldie on my back and Fido by my side. That night, all of us snuggled together, I thought to myself “I hope we will always be together.” But it didn’t happen that way. The next day, Goldie and Fido left.

The next morning, Goldie slowly made his way to me and Fido. “Guys…. I…. I miss my flock….. I’m gonna go back to them. They need me.” He said sorrowfully. I sat and stared at him with sadness in my eyes. Goldie was the first friend I had made. “You can’t go alone! It’s a long walk.” I said quickly, hoping he would stay with us. “I’ll go with him.” Fido said. I looked at them both. “You guys are gonna…. Leave me alone?” I said slowly, trying hard not to cry. “I wanna see what chickens really are… maybe even start a new life there. You should come with us Buddy.” Fido said. I looked at them, with no detection of emotion. “I can’t. My first mission is the mission I must finish. I have to find my master. I have to say my last goodbye to his body. Its my duty as his dog.” I said with a stern tone. So, they nodded their heads and with heavy hearts we said our goodbyes. I nuzzled noses with Fido and licked Goldie on his beak, and off they went towards the south. I watched them until I could only see 2 little dots on the horizon, than I slowly walked in the opposite direction, alone.

So days grew colder and soon there would be the first snow. I needed to get to my master and then find a place to sleep for the winter. I promised myself I would go back to Goldie and Fido the minute I could, but it would be a long trip back. So as scents became familiar, I was more alert. Every cabin I inspected to make sure it wasn’t mine. Suddenly, a smell came to my nose. My home. A rushed up to the cabin and sure enough, I saw my bed and my food dish through the window. I saw my toys and I saw my masters slippers. I smelled all my territory markings outside and I knew…. I was home at last. So, just as my master and I had on that horrid day, I trotted down that dusty road that led to the town. My stomach growled and I realized I hadn’t eaten since the animal shelter that burned down yesterday. So in search of trash that people throw out their windows, I searched the ditches. Suddenly I heard a slight meow. My ears perked and my nose twitched as I pushed apart some leaves and before me, a grey cat with green eyes lay motionless. I sniffed it and it meowed frantically, thinking I would eat him. “I’m not going to hurt you… but tell me, cat, what is wrong that you haven’t ran away?” I asked politely. The cat nervously said “A car hit me. 2 men were in it and didn’t even stop when they saw me crossing the road. They were wearing black masks and one had a mean voice and one did not speak.” “Jimmy and Mark.” I growled with anger. “You know them?” she asked. “Yes. They killed my owner.” I said sadly. The cat said “I’m sorry.” I helped her to her feet and inspected her side where she said she was hit. Indeed, it swelled and looked quite painful. “I am heading to town, I will take you to the vets.” I said firmly. Suddenly, a shadow appeared in the sky, and down swooped a hawk…. Heading right for the cat.
