The high pitched voice said again, "Oh... hi! Hello! How da ya do? I'm Zip! Oh wait... I already told you that! No matter... you're Fido! The wonder dog! And you're... you're not Goldie! And wheres Buddy? Huh? Huh? HUH?!" Me and Rio stood with our mouths open and looked at eachother. "Um... how do you know about..." I began to ask when I decided to ask, "Where are you? WHO are you?" On the top of a tree branch that hund close to the ground, a young grey squirrel bounced out. "Hi!!! I'm Zip!! I saw you fight those coyotes with Buddy and those other dogs... and Goldie! Goldie's my hero! Where is he? Can I get a autograph? Huh? Can I? Pleaseee!!!" He said very fast. All these questions and information tumbled inside my head, making me dizzy and a little irritated, but I didn't want to be mean to a fan. "Do you always talk this much and this loud?" Rio suddenly blurted, apparently irritated as well. The squirrel took no offense and answered, "Yes! So sorry bout that... my mom is still trying to teach me patience and silence... whatever that means! Anyways... Where's Goldie? WHERE?!" I looked at Rio and took a big breath of air, then slowly and sadly explained what happened, why Goldie nor Buddy was with us, why buddy was sad, why i left.... anything and everything in between, I told him. The now quiet squirrel sat, his tail no longer up in the air, but it stuck to the branch. His ears went down, his grin turned to a frown and I saw a tear run down his face. He looked at me, suddenly his sadness turning into determination, and confidently said, "I'm going back to be with Buddy! When ya have a friend, you can't leave him by himself in his time of need! You stay with him! Good or bad." I stood shocked and looked at Rio with a face that said, "He just said something NORMAL!" The squirrel hopped from branch to branch, nimbly and quick. "Wait! Buddy might not be the dog you know him for... he's changed." I barked weakly after the squirrel, but he was already out of sight.

Rio and I walked slowly through the woods, not knowing where we were going.... we were just walking. We came to the nearest town and saw a factory with smoke coming out the chimeny. I padded towards it with Rio beside me. I squeezed through side door and was greeted by MILLIONS of barks, growls, snarls and howls. I looked down the aisles and gasped. Dogs, big and small, fat and most skinny, mange and diesease taking most of them, all locked in cramped cages with no water or food! "Please! Be quiet and i'll let you free!" I barked to them and most of them remained quiet, but others still made noise. "WHATS ALL THE RACKET IN THERE?!" I heard a roar from a man in another room. Quickly I began to pull at the bars that locked the poor dogs in their cages, and one by one, each dog ran out the door, almost plowing Rio down. Finally all of them were loose and I peeked into the next room where the voice came from. 2 men sat in wooden chairs smoking cigares while playing cards. "Stupid dogs, they hear a car and they go on barking like there's no tomorrow!" I heard one of the men grumble. I grinned and remember when Buddy taught me how to play 'bark like theres no tomorrow'. Good times. I studied these men... something about them was very familar... but I couldn't quite put my paw on it. Suddenly the man who was very quiet shouted, "Mark! Look! Its that dog that attacked us!" Suddenly i remembered exactly who they were....

"Lets get outta here Rio! Hurry!" I barked to him and as we ran down the line of now empty cages, I just had to look back at the 2 men's faces. Marks face was as white as paper and Jimmys mouth hung wide open! I howled with laughter then ran out after Rio! "C'mon Jimmy! Get the truck! That dog... and rooster? Well, they're gonna pay dearly for this!" I heard Mark yell from behind me as I ran into the woods. We dodged bushes and trees, climbing rocks and jumping ditches, we were trying to take the hardest route so that they would have a difficult time following us. Suddenly the earth began to crumble beneath my paws and Rio squawked nervously. "Earthquake!" I barked, but it wasn't. The earth fell, and we fell with it. Within seconds I realized what it was... we had just walked into one of Jimmy and Mark's traps! Thats how they caught all those dogs and now they caught us! "Oh no...no, NO!" I barked and howled for help, but nobody came. Rio easily flew out of the deep hole, but he didn't want to leave me. "Rio, go." I told him, but he didn't leave the hole. He stayed at the top and looked for anything that would help me get out, but there was nothing a little, wimpy rooster could do for me, a heavy hunting dog. Suddenly Rio jumped down next to me and we both looked up as leaves crunched and 2 mean faces appeared. "Well, well, well... what do we have here?" Mark's mean voice echoed down the hole like swords peircing my heart.
