Sunday, April 18, 2021 a legend was born. A female welsh harlequin ducklings that I named peanut, in memory of @DaisyBuff s hen that passed. She quickly became my favorite duck in the flock. She’s was playful, and loving. I was hesitant of putting her outside with the rest of the ducklings that hatched, since I had a predator issue in the past. On July 20, 2021 I moved the flock outside to an old dog cage measuring 12x16. This afternoon, after getting home from school I went to check on the ducks. Something didn’t seem right all day. I had this anxiety throughout the day and was very worried. I knew something was wrong. I quickly rushed to the cage at around 3:30pm to see that peanut was laying on her back with feathers scattered throughout. Something else was missing. Her head. Her beak was left behind. Immediately I dropped to my knees and began crying. I haven’t stopped since. I though the cage was fully protected, but this proves it wasn’t. Tomorrow first thing in the morning, I am going to TSC to purchase more fencing and a trap. I believe it was an opossum. Please cuddle your ducks and give them a treat in honor of peanut, whenever you can. These animals are amazing and it is awful to loose such a loved one.
I would like this thread to be one where we can honor peanut, but please don’t remind me that my cage isn’t fully predator proof. I know that, and I’m taking more measures to improve security. Thank you.
You will be greatly missed peanut. Fly high baby girl.😭🪦💕💔🎀

She is beautiful. You should be very proud of yourself for raising up such a sweet and beautiful girl. None of this was your fault. How were you supposed to know what was going to happen? Answer is you couldn’t. You know now what to do so hopefully you won’t lose anymore in the future but seriously no one can blame you for this because it wasn’t your fault. She was loved and happy and that is the best thing we as poultry owners can provide for our animals- love. Hope you will not let this break you but instead you will be glad for the time you had with your beautiful Peanut. Today is her day she deserves it. I hope you will be able to see her again one day in the actions/personalities of other ducks you have or will get. I’m sure Peanut knew she was very loved and I’m very sorry she had to go so soon. She truly was the sweetest thing.
