The Duck-ponics Experiment - Raising minnows

Great, great stuff, 'zilla!

I wanted to add that I use a very, very cheap sump pump for my pool. It was $20 and plugs into my garden hose. I turn on the hose, and it sucks everything out and into my garden. Here's a link to my blog:

Although it reads too much like I'm advertising, I don't have any commercials, and I make no money from anything I do online. I just really like this pump, because it made my life easier.

Every bit of information helps. Post away

This is all great. I'm about to break ground here in New Hampshire on my duck pond. My question to all of you cold climate duck-ponders is...what to do in the winter? Options seem to be either drain the pond (and snowblow a roaming area) or use a pond heater or aerator. With our cold winters, I'm afraid it will freeze over anyway unless it is nuke powered. Will I be able to use the pump and filter in the winter?

BTW, I was looking at a 1000 gpm pond pump at Lowes for $120 and then wandered over to the plumbing section and found a 1500 gpm utility/sump pump for $67.

If you make it deep enough and keep the water circulating, you don't have to drain it. Do a google search on "Pond Winterizing" and you will find a lot of great sites.

I noticed the same thing...if the name POND is anywhere on a product label, the price is twice what it should be!

Think the ducks would hurt a turtle in the pond? The reason I'm asking is I need to build a turtle pond for our growing turtle and I have been wanting to get ducks so it would be nice to do both at one time. Great thead btw.

Thanks!

I don't think the ducks will bother a turtle as long as it isn't tiny. Now a BIG turtle may bother the ducks. I know snapping turtles are a problem for ducks, but not sure about the breed you have.

Be careful adding a turtle to your pond since turtles produce alot of waste, he might dirty up your pond. Also make sure the turtle breed you have can live outside in your area, all year round. If not make a winter plan for the little bugger.

Hello - Someday I would really like to do something similar to what Wifezilla has done, so I went back through the thread and drew out the final system. I've already sent Wifezilla a PM and had her take a look at what I drew. She noted some corrections which I've made and I am posting a link here for anyone else to review.

What have others tried? Any suggestions?
