The Duck Thread

I feel uncomfortable about locking them in their house all night with no water at all.

Me neither.
I have ways around that and they work AWESOME! :)
I put the waterer in a shallow rubber feed pan meant for horses, and it catches most of the water.
You can also use Amiga's watering station idea. I use that all the time in the coop and the worst mess it causes is the odd time the water pools in the bottom and overflows. You will not believe how much water the dog kennel will catch!
But I waste so much less shavings! The ducks stay drier, and I know that although it takes up room, in the end it is worth it!
Providing 24/7 water has been proven to increase egg production, and it keeps their bills cleaner, so the ones outside aren't as murky as fast.

I want to be happy that my single late bloomer egg was alive and well after all this but I found out this morning around 10am while at work that theres a power outage at home and it won't be back on till 7pm

this is just awful. I am so so sorry..

Guys, I need help.
My young 10 week old drake Brook is picking on everyone. I took away their oats for the eclipse molt, added dog food (two handfuls a day moistened) to their diet, and Brook is plucking the other birds bare! It went from a protein grab to a habit! He is bullying the others! :(
Here is a picture:

The feathers aren't falling off the ducks yet. This developed because of Brook's own drive to pluck feathers.
How can I fix this?

I candled Sugar's eggs while she was off the nest today and they are developing! Hoepfully I have some ducklings in my future, little welshie/pekin crosses.

You may need to separate him from the others to break the habit - set up a pen where he can see them but not actually get to them and leave him in there a few days and see if he stops. I'd also cover any wounds like that with Blu-Kote to stop the others from pecking at them.

I don't have a pen and since I already have two other drakes, we decided to get rid of him. It's very sad but it's the best thing to do. :( He never was tame, and that was the main factor in the decision making process.

Sometimes you have to do what's best for the others. I had to get rid of one of my very first drakes because he kept bullying my younger ducks until he eventually killed one. So it's hard, but you did the best thing for the others :hugs
