The Duck Thread

So cute:) I didn't realize myself, as a new duck owner, just how fast they grow. I can barely tell my 3 babies apart from my 3 adults now. I'm trying to get good pix to show everyone but they don't stand still long enough:)

Throw peas down to eat, and when they stop to scarf them up, pic time!!!

I just had my pekin hen pass away:( she just had her first clutch of 7 ducklings and left behind her mate, my Rouen drake. The ducklings are a little over a month old but I worry for them and my drake. If I adopted a new hen, would she take to the ducklings and my male? We live in a lake and worry she may just wonder off... Any advice??

Yuck! Just found my first egg in the duck pool...

Since I got 5 eggs yesterday and the day before that means it has been in the pool for 3 days. I'm thankful it didn't fall apart when I picked it up. Water logged eggs are sooo gross.

word of warning ducks and chickens can be raised together and even housed together, they won't separate other than to sleep, but if you have a rooster in the flock you need to keep him locked up separetely especially if he's not got older hens that school him.

we had the whole flock in an uproar this week, due to the Rooster decided he wanted to breed anything that moved as nobody was receptive he tried the duck hen and drake, thankfully we found a breeder with some slightly older hens and they schooled him so now he isn't terrorizing everyone.

My mallard drake isn't acting like this but he's got the blue Swedish hen, she normally schools them all if they get out of hand

This isn't normal and you can usually raise them together just fine without separating your rooster. I have five with the flock and none of them even look at the ducks, pretty much. Nor do they bother my geese, or even my guineas. They have enough hens to keep them happy. Actually most oftn you hear of drakes trying to mate hens, and while a rooster mating a duck is harmless though not a fun time for the duck, a drake mating a hen can be fatal.
