The Duck Thread

I'd put her in a small enclosed area to give her time to heal, if she is out running around trying to keep up with everyone she won't get that chance, if you have something like this maybe put a friend in with her for company. at least this would keep her off her leg and give it sometime to heal, but if dislocated it won't go back in by itself that will have to be done for her. you might try giving her some warm water therapy too but not letting her jump in or out.

She is in an area by herself and resting. Her left leg is sticking out. It just swings; completely useless. Sigh.

Please help!!

I'm a new duck and chicken owner my birds are about 4-5 weeks old. They have been stubborn and I have to do the whole put them in coop at night or they will sit in a corner and huddle. I live in Alabama so the nights aren't too cold right now but I have still been putting them up at night. Tonight I came up on my birds a little too quietly I think and my boyfriend had a green light and when I opened the coop it seemed to have startled them and one duck frantically got up and ran into sides and then came out flopping and neck cocked back and flailing looked to me like a seizure. Once we flipped her back over she started stumbling and walking like a drunk person all disoriented but was fairly quiet no quacking or anything. Once she regained her balance she was breathing a bit heavy I put her up and put some water for them to access and she drank a few sips took a few solid steps and laid down. She seems okay, I'm just worried that I'm going to wake up to my favorite duck dead. She has some pretty shallow breathing and was slow moving and blank stare but like I said seems ok. Did I give her a heart attack by scaring her?? ((Sorry for the long post)) just worried

That can happen. Have you read the Sticky (see the top of the Duck Forum in blue letters for the link to all the Stickies) on Raising Ducklings? Except for the part about limiting food and water at two weeks, I agree with the advice in that first post.

Do they have water 24/7? At four weeks they need to be around 70 to 75 degrees F. Yes they need to hear you coming. I always start gently talking to the before I come around corners.

Help please..... Have two drakes and a hen mallard. She has laid 12 eggs but only sits sporadically. Could it be she is being harassed by the drakes? I've heard I need to separate them now that she laying. But assumed they would go to one of the other areas in the big run....
