The Duck Thread

1 of my crested ducks, the largest, Daisy has gone broody on me. Yesterday she hissed at me before running off a nest she built, and I took the egg. Today she is back in the nest and refuses to move, she is really angry and hissing up a storm. The egg is not fertile, my Cayuga drake is only 2 weeks old and I wouldn't let the crested hatch their own eggs anyway. Too many neurological issues with the skull deformity. I had planned on letting the cresteds raise Cayuga ducklings, or geese, or chickens, if they went broody next year. But this year I have nothing to put under her. (I need to stop adding to my flock anyway, the storms damaged a lot and i have repairs and modifications to make to the goose and chickens coops as well as my house.) I wonder if getting the ducklings for Ebony kind of pushed Daisy to go broody? The ducklings follow Ebony everywhere, Ebony don't care, and both Daisy and Ivory wanted to meet the ducklings but they ran in terror calling for Ebony to come back. It was cute until the 2 goslings came over and tried to keep the ducklings away from Ebony because they imprinted on her too! (I have 2 crazy geese that think the tiny duck is mommy!) the ducklings are now in a playpen outside for safety and Ivory is right next to them. Really cute! I don't see any issues with integrating the ducks when the Cayugas are a bit older. Could I maybe interest Daisy into duck adoption? Ebony don't seem to care, she is more interested in freedom than her companions after 3 weeks locked up to heal from her injury. Unfortunately the ducklings have imprinted on Ebony, even if Daisy accepted them, would they accept her? What should I do for Daisy? I don't want to upset her but I can't let her stay broody with non-fertile eggs. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have hens that go broody and I still take the eggs for sale, or in the case of my one Pekin hen, I eat or sell all her eggs as I do not want any more Pekins. Just keep taking the eggs and she'll give up. It's YOUR choice, not hers. She'll get over it.

Yes, but would she go broody again next year, when I actually will have fertile eggs to hatch? I would want her broody then, just not now.

Is that a Rouen Duck with the Pekin? I just hatched my first egg last week and it was a Pekin, then I bought it a friend...a little Rouen chick.
