The Duck Thread

It's in the 50's here right now. The ducks are out in the garden loving the melting puddles! I'm not keen on it—too much mud. It's warm enough they can stay in their pen at night instead of the greenhouse. My hubby cleaned that out so they can go back in probably tomorrow night when it drops down below freezing again. The ducks don't mind the cold, but their water freezes. They're not fond of the greenhouse because they can't run and flap their wings!

It's been unusually warm, sunny and dry here. This weekend we took the kayak out and all wore T shirts and shorts. No snow in the mountains, so that bad news for the rivers and fish this summer... Again. But, the ducks are happily running around the yard finding bugs and snails.

Unless you have Muscovy's about the only place you'd find frost bite is on your ducks feet. and that doesn't happen often but it can happen, last year we had a member who rescued a little call duck that got frozen in a water dish he eventually lost his one foot. My one Muscovy drake has frost bite on his knob of flesh above his bill, I am watching it close and so far no infection. Winter this year so far hasn't been anything last like years which I am very grateful for.

Thank you to those that responded about frost bite on ducks. I guess I'm a worry wart for nothing. They got out today in 47* weather they loved it! Probably would have enjoyed themselves more if their pool wasn't frozen but nothing I can do about that right now.
So now another question... I am hoping to get some red Bourbon turkey poults this spring and also build a new duck pen area. Can I put the turkeys in with the ducks (after they mature a little of course). The turkeys won't hurt the ducks or vice versa. Also the young turkeys won't try to swim in the duck pond will they? I sure appreciate your help and advice. Thank you!

From reading on hear I'd say Turkeys and ducks and even other poultry don't mix well. On the Muscovy thread a turkey tore up a duck and I have seen other people post about their turkeys even going after their geese, your own decision of course but I wouldn't pen them or house them together. I don't even keep my ducks in with my chickens or my geese, they all run together on a half acre but stay in their own houses separate from each other.

Would someone help me and tell me what breed this big guy is? He was sold to me as a duckling and I was told he was a Silver Appleyard, as he began to grow I could see this was definitely not the case!! Any help would be appreciated
