The Duck Thread

Oh no. I don't wanna even imagine how that happened. Is Opie OK?

Oh yeah, Opie is great! Thanks for asking...

They might be starting to molt their juvenile feathers. I didn't think it happened so early, but mine are losing feathers like mad. Looks like a duck exploded in their run. Were they just in one spot, or scattered everywhere?

I think yours are just the same age as mine, right? 9 weeks or so?

Yep, they are almost 9 weeks. I'm glad you said that. I thought it was a bit early too, but I'm guessing you are right. There were more new ones on the ground this morning! And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this. Their run is roughly 60' x 50', and the feathers were scattered over about a third of that. All down one side.... between their favorite bedding spot in one corner and their pool in another corner. Not as much out in the middle near the feeder or water. The only ones I noticed were white feathers, so I'm going to have to do a closer inspection for dark feathers. If all of them are doing it, some of the feathers should be dark, but they would blend with the ground and leaves more, so maybe I just didn't notice them.

Sounds like molting to me. Mine started around that age and I felt that it took forever! Some of my also molted around 18 weeks too. Crazy ducks!

Hi guys I am new to this site just wanted to know is it ok to feed my ducks brown bread or can it harm them
It's not very good for them. If it's sprouted, that's better but still there are oils and salt added to it. Green lefty veggies are a much better choice along with meal worms and mine go nuts over peas. Welcome!

You're welcome. I am glad she is okay. She is a cutie. Any new revelations on Chibs' gender?
