It is exteremly sad how little people know about their food. i remember watching an episode of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (it is really good, if you don't watch it, then you should!!!) where he had these big poster board things with three pictures on them. He had one child come in the room to him at a time and asked them where things came from (the pictures were the choices.) For example, one child (these kids were in middle school) was asked where milk comes from. The choices were "Fish" "Cows" or "wheat" and she got it right, cows. Later on though they showed some outrageous answers. One boy was asked where butter came from, he said that butter came from oats, He Was in 8th or 9th grade, and he didnt know what butter was made from.

But I still think that people would know that eggs came from chickens, you know the "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" Has been debbated frequently, and I know in my school people do talk about it, so I just cannot comprehend the fact that people don't know where eggs come from. I kinda understand that some people would believe that brown eggs were organic because i know i rarely see white organic eggs. I suppose it would be a fairly easy mistake to make if you refused to read labels.

people these days...

Last spring I was at the feed store and we were waiting for a sweet Russian lady and her three daughters to choose out their chicks. The lady turned and asked "Do you know about chickens?"
"Do you need help?" I ask.
"Yes, which chicks lays white eggs?"
I was caught a little off guard..."You want white eggs? Well, the Buff Orpington lays light eggs."
"Ok, one of these!" She pointed to the BO brooder. We went over almost every chick breed at that store, when we reached the BA's she asked about them and I thought she was talking about the color of the chicken when it got out of it's fluff so I said "Oh yes, this chickens beautiful! When it grows up it'll be black with a greenish sheen..." Here I stopped because she looked really confused. "Black egg? We want good egg." I think that lady went home with ten or twelve chicks, non of which laid white eggs.

That dear, dear lady. I guess she thought that white eggs were the edible ones.

i am a romanian woman and i hope i wont offend you people, but i HAVE to ask this: what do they teach you in your schools about? i remember we had biology courses in the 5th grade, zoology in the 6th, agriculture in the 7th and anatomy in the 8th. that besides romanian and world history, romanian and world geography, physics, chemistry, mathematics, music, drawing and other stuffs that don't come in my mind right now. all these things we had to study in our first 8 years in school. what are your kids studying about at school in these first 8 years? again, i hope i don't offend anybody, i'm just curious.

That's classic. The guy down the street was dumbfounded when I brought him my first white eggs. He thought they were all brown and the stores bleached them.

I have degrees in biology, business, math and engineering but don't have a clue what I learned in the 8th grade. The only thing you REALLY learn in school here is discipline. It's just like the military, or a job.
