Just watch for signs of reddened combs and slight behavior changes. They may even squat for you when you are nearby. All birds are different and it is difficult to pinpoint the exact age but I do not think that you will need to wait until august.I was wondering when other's EEs started to lay. Mine are only 5 1/2 weeks old so I know I have a ways to go but will they be laying pretty good by May or should I be expecting closer to August? I already have the big girls so we have enough eggs. The kids just want to see what their "cuties" eggs look like.
I haven't visited this thread in awhile.Love the attitude over here. The projects thread and lavender breeders split off from the ameraucana thread because of the controversy.I still watch the thread but sometimes skip it when a rant is going on.Seldom post over there. There are two threads that I know longer frequent and the other is the Marans because they also take themselves much too seriously. Life is too short for sprewing venom.
My Columbian Wyandotte took 9 months to lay her first egg. It seemed to take forever!I assume almost everything will lay sooner than my Brahmas did. They are so slow growing and they were May 2012 babies so two of them are just starting to lay this past week.
I'm new to this thread, but I love it too! Some very nice people, with great helpful information on ALL things that have to do with EE's and chickens in general.I haven't visited this thread in awhile.Love the attitude over here. The projects thread and lavender breeders split off from the ameraucana thread because of the controversy.I still watch the thread but sometimes skip it when a rant is going on.Seldom post over there.![]()
Of my two older EEs, one started laying at 22 weeks, the other not until 32 weeks. I have some new ones...one is 20 weeks and not even close and one is 25 weeks, but she was sick as a chick and is like 5 weeks behind in growth so we don't expect eggs from her any time soon.I was wondering when other's EEs started to lay. The batch I bought last year started about 24 weeks. You do have a bit to go.. but probably not August!
great sounds like the book I need.Good points about non-standard Ameraucanas.
I always thought it was odd to call it a different breed just because of being non-standard![]()
We got EE's just to add some color to our egg basket, but they are def 'hatchery quality'. I'm waiting to see what my blue-butts lay before selling the 4 EE's I have left. If the BB's lay olive eggs, I'll trap nest the EE's to see who laid the big green eggs that hatched the BB's, and keep her. But otherwise I'm selling them asap. I'm pretty sure 2 are laying brown eggs.
The feather color surprises are pretty cool though. So many patterns!
I ordered the chicken color genetics book from the Netherlands (bye bye tax return) and can't wait to have the proper genetic codes to plug into the chicken calculator![]()
Jerry I agree and I just wish they would all agree. I really want some Brown Reds but am fearful of posting them on there if I got them lol.I haven't visited this thread in awhile.Love the attitude over here. The projects thread and lavender breeders split off from the ameraucana thread because of the controversy.I still watch the thread but sometimes skip it when a rant is going on.Seldom post over there.![]()
