The EE braggers thread!!!

OutRun thank you for the link I am just developing my interest in chickens and as a newer person I have been directed to "backyard chickens" not rude ppl with chickens! Don't get me wrong no one has been directly rude to me but some of what I read as legit questions get really snotty responses on a variety of breed threads not just the Ameraucana. I have some beautiful birds that I recieved from a breeder that is working on developing her lines and they weren't what she wanted to keep for breeders. I don't know if I would dare post pics as when others have they have been told to take there pictures and chickens elsewhere! Haha I do have to laugh tho! I have delt with that for years with horse shows. I understand ppl love their birds I def do, but seriously I don't think it's worth hurting other ppl's feeling over or making ppl feel stupid for asking questions or being proud of their beautiful birds! Just saying!

Please post your pictures! We love all EE's on this thread, and everyone loves to see pictures of beautiful birds. This thread is all about variety and I don't think anyone would look down their nose at your birds. I have some "project rejects" myself and I loooove them! Great, friendly little Ameraucana x Silkies. Perfect for a backyard flock. Every chicken can have a place and a purpose in this world. We don't all have to be hardcore breeders although (Although I do believe they are necessary in the chicken world). I think that is the beauty of BYC, everyone can find a place where they feel comfortable discussing their birds and asking questions.

Along the same lines with regards to breeding within the paint horse registry a horse born or 2 paint parents is considered separately within the registry as a solid ( without paint markings) aka the ugly/less desirable step child. Which is basically the way Ameraucana people treat purely breed non-standard meeting Ameraucanas. They have themselves created the confusion by considering those the same as the cross breeds all in the EE category! I understand the hard work that goes into trying to develop an excellent breeding program. However I don't think ppl need to get so mad when ppl ask for clarification. Honestly there is a great deal of confusion and ppl are just trying to understand! It's annoying when I read ppl responding " this is a section just for XYZ breed you should go to this other area" and not in a kind manor It s a little rude and high schoolish. (Not just with regards to this breed either) sorry rant over!

I do hope you weren't annoyed when I directed somebody over here with their EE projects.. I have seen the people get upset about EEs being talked about on "their Ameraucana" thread - its much friendlier over here. I keep forgetting about the new AM thread.. gotta make myself a stickie!

I agree, some AM people have caused problems by labeling both their crossed colors, culls AND the feed store birds EE. If they are trying to make things clear maybe they need a name for the Hatchery birds that has nothing to do with their cross breeding names? So many people think the feed stores buy Ameraucanas and cross them to get the birds they sell.. that isn't exactly how it worked. Trying to force a label onto Hatchery birds doesn't work - as we see by Rhode Island Reds being called "Heritage" because the hatcheries sell red sex link crosses under the RIR name - or the Barred Rocks - ick! And there are more... Most people call them Hatchery Quality (meaning mostly bad) - but I guess the AMs are too new to want those being indiscriminately interbred with what they are trying to create.

To try and follow your horse example (although probably imperfectly), the hatchery birds would be like a mass breeder taking a bunch of Mustangs and putting them in with Arabians, Clydesdales and Thoroughbreds then breeding among that group and throwing in other random horses and calling the resulting horse a Paint no matter what it looked like.

I couldn't help myself, they were selling "Americana's" at the feed store. I am a sucker for those fluffy cheeks, sure hope my husband doesn't kill me!

I should never be allowed to go to the feed store alone during chick days...

Awwww, too cute. I had problems going to Tractor Supply when they have chicks, until I found out you have to buy 6 and they only had 2 I wanted. I stopped going because they might get more...

My feed store also has chicks, and if I didn't already have 8 fluffy faces in the brooder right now I just might have to get some. I tell myself "walk on past.. those are not Ameraucanas... you already have 14 big ones at home" but they are SOOOO cute! I do much better if I do NOT look!

Lucky you getting to bring home some EE babies. I seem to have lost one of my adults...a RIR. She disappeared yesterday and I can't find her anywhere (no blood, no feathers, no body and no hidden nest in case she went broody). Anyway, hubby (jokingly) said that I need to get some more chicks to replace. I want more EE and have been saving eggs from my EE hen waiting for a broody because so far I haven't seen EEs in the stores here.

It sounds like you may be very happy with a Leghorn/Ameraucana cross. They have the laying power and foraging abilities of a leghorn but lay big blue eggs. They are petite like a leghorn. A BYC member Dmrippy sells hatching eggs, here is the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/662423/buy-it-now-super-blue-egg-layers-12

Hmm... An interesting cross and I'm sure they are hardy and lay very well. However, they seem to be hatching out with mostly white feathering, and in my experience white birds are the most vulnerable to predators. I don't actually have chickens at the moment but I will when we move out to Whidbey Island next year, and of course I'm obsessing about breeds now, because what else is BYC for? LOL. I'm going to have an auto coop door and auto feeders/waterers because we go out of town a lot, so my birds will definitely need to be flighty, camouflage, and most of all alert. A cross between an EE and a brown leghorn would probably work. Really though I would prefer sexed chicks over hatching eggs. It's just so much easier. Then again I might go with POL pullets. That way I will know for sure what egg color I am getting, plus I won't be as attached to them as if I raised them from chicks. I expect we will have occasional losses since they will be free-ranging from dawn till dusk every day, mostly unsupervised, maybe even without a fence.

Thank you for the kind words! I have been lurking around some of the other forums and sometimes am almost intimidated to ask questions... That being said, I have a question that I hope wasn't just asked two pages back. If I cross my Americuana roo with a barred rock or RIR, will I get blue, green or brown egg layers? In what proportion? I know this is very basic... thanks!

That's the thing with roosters -- they don't lay eggs so there is no way of knowing what egg genes your guy carries. It's more complex than this but for the sake of simplicity... We know the hens carry brown so that puts blue out of the running. If your boy is pure for blue, you'd get 100% green layers. If he's carrying a blue and a brown, you'd get 50/50 green/brown. If he missed the blue gene, all of his offspring would lay brown.
