The EE braggers thread!!!

I thought my Easter Eggers were so sweet until today! I have 3 chicks that have been growing out in a little pen inside the run. They are 7 weeks old. Today I let them out in the run to see what happened. Everyone left them alone except for the EEs!! The ran around pecking at them, I was so surprised! Will it take a long time to integrate?
I guess your question has never really been answered. I would guess that since they are establishing the pecking order straight away, the newbies will just learn their place faster. Instead of being indifferent forever they will get their point across and it will be done.

It is always surprising who becomes bossy under different situations. My lowest ranking hen lets the newbies know she is boss when it comes to food and stays with the other big girls all day but at night roosts with the new kids.

I see. I'm doing it this way *because* I had a fatality when trying an introduction of POL pullets. The rooster responsible is no longer but I'm still approaching with caution. I realize there is some risk involved putting chicks in the vicinity of hens no matter what but I am exercising caution by doing it outside (no corners) and being attentive. It's less about age and size difference for me than watching and gauging reactions. Lots of ways to accomplish an integration.
Last summer I had some young pullets given to me, about a month old or so. It was warm enough they didn't need heat so I got some junk out of the pile and made a pen inside the big girls pen. An old cage with wood sides and wire bottom, covered the top with tin to keep off the rain. Screwed the slatted from from a wooden futon couch covered with chicken wire, one on each side of the cage, then closed off the end with a similar peice. This gave them a space about 3 ft x 5 ft. I put some tin and plywood scraps over the top for shade and to keep the older chickens from getting in. The end peices I just used bungee cords to hold the end to the sides. When they were getting bigger I opened up one corner just big enough for the little girls to go through but not the big ones. They would come out and run around and yes the big girls would peck them on the head, but they could get back in their pen or hide somewhere else. I fed and watered the babies in their pen so the big girls weren't eating the chick feed. After awhile the babies were roosting in the coop with the big girls. I have the sides of an old crib and I think that would also work to let young birds get into a safe place to eat and drink where the bigger hens can't follow.

I am bummed...will not get to see what my EE's turned out to be. Stray dogs got into the coop and killed every bird but one of my Light Brahma hens. Time to dust off and start over I guess
