These posts are funny. I am laughing at y'all. Isn't it fun how they are all different. Who would think that chickens have different personalities ! But they are all different and amusing to watch and eventually they will lay eggs. And the red comb and squatting are the first signs. As far as diet, Once the birds do establish a regular pattern of laying and molting and then starting to lay again watch their diet more carefully as in if they do stop laying, maybe they are getting too many treats. Since the "feed" is formulated to provide them with adequate nutrition they may be eating more treats than feed. (Too many treats not enough of the feed.)
Keep having fun with your birds !

Hi all!

This is my first post, but I have been reading for a while.

meowmm65- You have great taste in names!

We have 3 EE’s named Lucy, Prudence and Strawberry! We also have Eleanor Rigby the dog, and Lennon & McCartney the goats! (Plus 2 other dogs that came with names already)

I am trying to identify some of my chicks that came from my pet chicken, and it seems like two of them can only be EEs (yellow chick to start, whitish buff feathers coming in on wings with greyish stripes and red neck and head feathers). However, they both have very yellow legs and toes, no darkness. Don't EEs mostly have darker shanks? Does this indicate they won't lay blue or green eggs?

I know photos would help, but there are only so many choices they could be (large layers from my pet chicken), so if they aren't EEs, I'm clueless!

Nope, EE's can have nearly any leg color and any fluff color as chicks. Most are chipmunk striped, but MANY are also a dark marbled color, or solid yellow, or gray and brown, and so on. Leg color does not define egg color.

Here is a pick of my easter eggers from mypetchicken.com that I got last year. They are the yellow-ey ones. All the EE's had a chipmunk stripe down their body. They did have darker legs even when they were little. I am not sure if mypetchicken gets all their EE's from the same place so who knows. But if they are all yellow to start I would not think they are EE. And actually, my EE's are the smaller of all my hens. Not sure if I would call them "large layers" maybe... medium layers. lol
