That's a great question, and I'm sure there are folks who know better than I do. I think you have to make sure the desired traits you want to keep (ie comb type, beards, color, egg color) are present in your breeding stock to start. But then it's just like any breeding program. It takes many generations and careful record keeping to produce your goal. Remember, all breeds of modern domestic chickens started out as something else and are the result selective breeding.

Your roo is very handsome!

Are you going for the blue color? I think overall health, and egg color and productivity are important too. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the info!

I know Olive eggers are a popular cross with Marans are their any other colors people have success with?

She Is good looking. comb looks fairly red, maybe getting close.

I feel your pain, I have 7 that are 33 weeks and the first one started laying a couple days ago.

One of my girls must have started laying yesterday - I found two eggs today in the nest box. I'm assuming they're coming from my 8.5 month old pullet, her comb is the most developed. It took her long enough! I have two other EE's that are a month younger, I hope they start soon.

I am not sure what to call the color, but I like it!

Gorgeous mossy eggs, kahlua!!

Well, my EE eggs are on day 19 and.... they were just peeping at me!!
