Your girls are very pretty! So one of your definitely turned into a very different color than the chipmunk coloring she had as a chick. I'm going to ask a dumb question so please forgive me but...are the feathers coming in to the chicks now the color they will be as adults? I can tell my BO and Barred Rocks feathers are looking as they should as adults. My two brown ones from the first order have feathers looking much like the tail end of your second bird. Are there any websites where people post their "before (chic) and after (adult)" pics of EE birds? I'm taking weekly photos of mine so I can share with others once they are grown. Knowing how they will look is almost as exciting as getting a first egg for me.
Yes, if you look back thru this tread and the others about EE, you will find many many chick/adult photos. And yes, their feather patterns will change as they grow up. Mine also started as chipmunk color and then went thru that spotty looking phase and here they are now.....
The two on the top left...

Are now these. The grayish chick is the one on the left, and the brownish chick is the one on the right.

Not a dumb question, and usually not, there will be several changes usually as they grow, sometimes just subtle and sometimes drastic. They can also change some at the first molt. I have one that is on her 2nd molt and has changed a little, but most have not.

Hey Kassaundra, how old are chickens when they have their first molt? I have one that is only 9 months old and she is already losing all her feathers. Is that unusal, usual or should I look for another reason she is losing her feathers? She is a RIR.

Happy Wednesday all! I very much need to get some updated pictures of Pearl and Opal, but for now, I am happy to announce that they have both started to lay. Both lay a blue green egg. Pearl laid her first today

She is my favorite girl...super lovey and cuddly. Both EE are so much more friendly than than any of our other birds.

With this said, my DH and I are considering starting a breeding program. Since we love the EE's so much, we are considering Ameracauna's as a breed. Does anyone know how the Ameracauna temperament compares to that of EE's?

Finally, a picture of Opal's first egg (pretty sure it is hers), next to my Blue Andalusian's egg:

To make it easier, #1 turned orange, #2 turned partridge ....

2 days old: #2 top left (I think, if not, she is one of the other two chipmunks!)
#1 lighter brown one below #2. She wasn't AS chipmunky but the brown center back stripe was darker than it appears in this picture.

#2 lower right ~ 1.5 weeks. Chipmunks at the top are Partridge Chanteclers

#2 ~2weeks (and an Ancona)

#2 on left ~2.5 weeks (and a Black Australorp, Ancona, Partridge Chantecler x2 and a Cubalaya)

~3 weeks #2 front left, then #1

#2 second from left, #1 orange in the middle facing camera
3 weeks. They just went into the coop for the first time, a wee bit nervous!

#1 at about 8 weeks

#2 at 8 weeks

So you can see that they change a lot!
#1 started showing orange/red replacing the lighter brown, white and black. That pretty much continued slowly.
#2 showed the partridge patterning early but went through weird color changes like the one in the last picture. Where the heck did that orange neck come from? From light and dark brown to grayish brown to grayish/brownish with mostly white head to black head, orange neck, brown partridge body to black head and partridge body with black neck feathers with lovely gold/brown centers.

I guess the answer to "are the feathers coming in to the chicks now the color they will be as adults?" is
MAYBE!

My girls were hatched in Sept and molted the following fall, so right at 1 year old. This years chickens that were hatched out and less than 1 year old, but old enough to be laying (and not EE, they are NN) are not molting. It does sound unusual to me that she would molt the first time that young.
