We need those critical breeders. We need those opinionated folks determined to maintain the quality of the breeds they love. If we didn't have them, all our chickens would be mutts, and we wouldn't be able to pick and choose birds with the qualities we love. You'll find snobby chicken folks in every single breed thread on this site, but the Ameraucana folks have a particular gripe, and I can't entirely blame them for being sick of talking about it. If you ask me, the blame for this entire argument lies with the hatcheries. And I agree, if they haven't already, the ABC should consider pursuing action against the hatcheries. EEs are not non-standard Ameraucanas. They're not a breed at all. I couldn't keep a beagle, and breed it with every dog in my neighborhood, and call all the puppies beagles just because they have some beagle traits. That being said, I LOVE my EEs. They're wonderful birds. I think it's because of the hatchery issue, that ABC folks so object to non-standard colors in birds from 2 Ameraucana parents. They have to work harder than people who raise other breeds to maintain and educate about their breed standard, because there is so much misinformation. Some folks are better at educating more politely than others.

I agree that there should be pressure etc on the hatcheries to stop selling birds as Ameraucanas that aren't. It's actually false advertising and there are laws against that.

This would certainly help all the innocent consumers!

Well being as EE's are so wonderfully unique and colorful I thought it would be fun to share some pic's of my young birds. Still not sure of sex, right now I am thinking pullets? They are somewhere around 8-10 weeks old. They were part of my friends project pen and she just had way too many chickens, so I took a few .

I have a beautiful clean faced EE roo, when crossed on my brown egg hens, what color egg will the resulting pulleys lay?

Does he have a single comb or a pea comb? I'd guess if he has a single comb chances are good they will lay some shade of brown, but if he has a pea comb chances are good for green/olive

Outrun, Thank you for your kind words. I feel worse about the idea of hurting an animal than kicking a human's butt! haha Humans usually deserve it! ANYWAY! Those birds are drop-dead GORGEOUS! If I wasn't already into EE's, those would make me want to start! I'll take ALL of her culls! Good Lawd! What state are ya'all in? I wonder if she could ship birds out? haha! Well...seriously, tho! I'd love to buy a few girls (and a guy) that looked like those girls.

OH! I'm off for Spring Break, next week. Gonna visit my Grandson, but my buddy down the road has volunteered to incubate a clutch for me. I gave him 37 eggs about an hour ago. hehe Maybe we'll get some more EE's, as most of the eggs are green, blue, pink, greyish-purple/lavender, or Bantee eggs. hehe What a mess of eggs it is.

Here's an opinion that might(read: will probably/definitely) REALLY crinkle some noses... But the intention is not to troll... just to throw another thought out there...

The Catch All term, "Easter Eggers", should probably be used like "Brown Layers" or "White Layers" or "Tinted Layers" or "Chocolate Layers"... And it should include any individual bird or breed that possesses the blue egg gene... Pure Breed or not... I've seen some hatcheries use the term "Rainbow Layer" which suggests a variety of genes and egg colors... and as such, "Rainbow Layer" really ought to be the interchangeable term for a "Mixed Breed Easter Egger".

And I also think Ameraucanas as a breed should probably include green eggs as well as blue eggs in their standard since they can and often do occur and are a result of the breeding done to create the Ameraucanas to begin with.

Which would mean...

Easter Eggers would include Cream Legbars, Araucana, Ameraucana, and Mixed Breed Easter Eggers.

If you boolean these terms out... they would be distinguished thusly.

All Araucanas are Easter Eggers, but not all Easter Eggers are Araucanas. They lay ONLY blue eggs. This is their breed standard (insert standard here)
All Cream Legbars are Easter Eggers, but not all Easter Eggers are Cream Legbars. They lay ONLY blue eggs. This is their breed standard (insert standard here)
All Ameraucanas are Easter Eggers, but not all Easter Eggers are Ameraucanas. They lay ONLY blue or pale green eggs. This is their breed standard (insert standard here)

This ignores the whole Standard/Non-Standard crap and creates some clarity.

This is EXACTLY what I have always thought. An Easter Egger (to me) is just a bird that lays a colored egg. Not a breed. Very well said and a GREAT idea!
