The EE
Welcome to BYC and EE thread!

we worried about the red patches but have heard that if they are very even that it could still be a girl and her comb is still small and not red and doesnt have three rows of the pea comb so we are still hopeful its a girl.-lisa

I have a one year old EE hen that I found crowing this morning.  I don't believe she is a he.  I mean it's been a year.  Can a hen crow like a rooster?  There is no big tail, although it's always plucked out so it's hard to tell.  I have a hen apron on her because it appears our rooster has treaded on her.  She is also very petite for an EE and does not strut around like a normal rooster would walk.  But I can't believe I saw her crow this morning.  Now I am confused.  She does have a different comb compared to the other EE hens, it's flopped over.  I can't wait around all day to see if she lays an egg.  I am also not able to identify spurs.  Even my normal rooster doesn't appear to have spurs.  So I'm not sure.
yes, hens can crow. I've had two hens do it and it messed with me HARD. It's a hormonal response because the hens either don't have a rooster, or they feel like they don't have a good rooster, so one hen produces more testosterone and will take on the duties of a rooster (ths includes trying to breed other hens, but they can not produce sperm). While not always the cause of he/she chickens, that usua
Ly explains it. My one hen that did it developed a larger, redder comb, three inch spurs, pointed hackle and saddle feathers, crowed regularly and mounted other hens. Yet every day she left an egg in the nest, lol.

Anybody else here have skittish EE? Mine started out so sweet and promising and now are so skittish they can barely be handled.

Not sure what the problem is.Maybe the particular mix that they are is the problem? I'm pretty disappointed in them actually. My red pullets from TSC are much friendlier and more personable.I've tried treating them and feeding them food by hand but most of the time they won't take it.They will eat crickets that I throw in the cage and also dried mealworms. Will their skittishness rub off on my friendly girls when I end up introducing them to the flock? Or will the flock have a calming influence on them?Any help would be much appreciated.

How old are they? My chicks went through a "HELP - the HAND" stage just after their first big feathers were all in.. that lasted until they got their adult feathers. The hens calmed way down after they started laying - the roosters tested me when he was getting his hormones in but he is well behaved now.

They are around 4 weeks of age give or take a few days. They are getting in the first feathers so hopefully they will tame like yours.I try to talk with them gently, handle them gently and take them outside for a few minutes everyday to get them out of the brooder.Pretty much what I did with the older ladies that are already in the coop. The EE's started out being very friendly.Almost too friendly as one always wanted us to hold her all day and then over night they both just went nuts and wanted nothing to do with us.

my chicks go through a similar stage and then as they get bigger they realize that you aren't going to hurt them and you might be bringing something good to eat and they get friendlier; by the time they start laying they are underfoot every time I go in the pen/

The chicks were very good models for their 4 week photoshoot today. As I've mentioned before, I got mixed breed chicks, and I think I'm getting them sorted out now. I'm new at this so my guesses could be completely off.

These two are definitely non-standard Ameraucana/EE's- slate legs, tuft cheeks. I'm hoping to get some gorgeous blue eggs out of these (??)girls(??), although the one more brown on it's head on the right still has me wondering...

The last two, Penny and Hank. I actually think Hank is a wheaten Marans, but I'm not positive. I think I'll go over to that thread and see what people think...

Hi,
For what it's worth, Hank has the same coloration as my Wheaten Ameraucana cockerels at the same age, but his head, comb, and beak are different.
