The EE braggers thread!!!

So my poor EE hens that have been broody didn't get to hatch chicks. Apparently my rooster has not been doing his job. 28 clear eggs. BLEH!

So when we were at the feed store today getting food, I picked up six little EE chicks to give them. Or attempt to give them as the case may be. One refuses to let me put any under her and got violent. The other got mad that I moved her from her favorite nest box to a new spot, but is gentle towards the chicks. So she got all six of them. They are happily sleeping under her right now. I can't wait to see how they feather in. I picked out the ones that didn't have the regular chipmunk pattern.
Next time put them under her at night so she'll accept them

So the hen is calling the chicks to follow her but they don't understand yet. So she's been following them around. She tries to tuck them under her and they pop out. That is funny to watch.

The other hen was reaching under and biting at the chick I did let go of last night. So I had pulled it back out. I had a hen before that wouldn't take chicks. She killed the ones who hatched under her and only wanted to sit eggs. If I can't get chicks under safely I won't leave them with a hen.

I wish my one old hen would go broody again. She will take any chicks you offer her as long as she's broody. She cares for them for about ten weeks so there is a good timeframe for giving them to her. She even took a three week old that was abandoned by it's mom in to cold of weather.

I guess some chickens are just bad mothers. But it's our fault they're turning out like this. All of our chicks are being hatched out by incubators and making chickens loose their maternal instincts such as going broody and rearing the young. Even the chicks are confused, they imprint on mom as soon as they hatch but your chicks are incubator babies. The first thing they saw was a hatchery employee tossing them around.

Momma is coming right along

My EE hens eggs have finally almost finished hatching! There is only 1 more egg to go and I think it will be out in the next 4 hours as it has been pipping for quite a while now!!!

This is when she just had one chick and I brought her into the house because it gets very cold here in the mornings!

I then moved her to a different box!

Now she has 8 chicks and one egg! All of the chicks are soo cute!

Here is a pic of the chicks and the egg!!

One of her chicks has a beard/muffs or whatever you call them and it looks soo adorable!!! I say " Like mother like Chick"
So out of 11 9 eggs hatched! One died while it was trying to pip and the other was a quitter!
