The EE braggers thread!!!

I just found out I have 1 ee hen, I bought some barred rocks and the ee was mixed in I didn't have a clue what she was until 3 days ago when she layed her first egg BLUE and then two more to follow. YAY, I am so excited. I have her in with the barred rock rooster, what do I need to increase my chance of colored egg laying offspring?

If you want blue or green laying offspring, I'd breed her to a rooster that hatched from a green or blue egg. A pea-combed EE roo would be your best bet (or an Ameraucan or Araucana). If you breed her to a brown layer breed, you may get brown or olive eggs.
I crossed my EE to a Buff Orp roo, and got khaki egg layers.

What colors are you looking for?

If you breed her to a Marans or Welsummer rooster, you can get olive color eggs. Breed her to a light brown breed (such as BR) then you'll likely get green eggs, but it's possible to get brown or variations in between.

If you're interesting in Olive eggers, look at the olive egger thread in this section.

I dont really care what color eggs I just want colored ones. I guess I'm going to leave her with the br until I can find an ee rooster which wont be easy around here b/c nobody ever knows what that is.

Now that I'm resigned to having EEs instead of the real deal, I put in a fine, deep dust bath and watched one discover it. She/he (3 months old) did the usual commical but thorough job over the course of about a half hour. The amazing thing was that this chicken made a very loud purring sound. Nobody else has ever made that sound and this chicken has never made the sound that I've heard. It was a primal pleasure sound - could imagine the original chickens in the forests somewhere making this sound as they drove off the pests on their skin. The dust bath is wood stove ash, DE, pine chips, and sand. Oooh oooh good.

Last Sunday we got these beauties, so after reading all 110 pages and drooling over everyones birds, I figured I'd post a few pic's of ours. They are supposed to be Americaunas but I don't see them showing the 'standard' colors soooo.. opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated. They are in a hutch type pen right now w/ a trio of Lt Brahmas (we got at the same time) until they get used to 'here' and hopefully this weekend they will be free ranged like the rest of our chickens.

This lil' girl is the third of the trio, she had been picked on quite a bit and is now separated out so none of the others can pick on her..she's got such a sweet look about her.

Any ideas on egg color? They all 3 have pea combs so I'm hoping maybe blue?... I have so many 'project' ideas!! I want SnowMan to cover our Blue/lavender Polish pullet and see what we get, I also want him to cover our Brahma hens... I want to use the Brahma roo to cover Mystic.....oh the list goes on lol
I also want 'really bad' to play with a lacing within the EE and try to keep the pretty egg colors, muffs and beards... anyone want to do some egg trading when this starts taking place?? I really want some Blue or Blue laced or especially BLR EE's!!! It will be a few months yet before I start getting eggs so no rush.... Just something to ponder..
