maybe he needs to be in a pen of his own until he gets used to you and your family.

I kept a pair of young chickens in a pen and tryied to make sure they were used to us.

the cockrel was scared of me and now he will come up to me and take treats and come running arround my feet.

and now he his loose with the large laying flock.

so I think he just needs more time.

Ashley, I don't think it's worth the risk to your child and the rest of the family to keep a young cockerel that is already showing aggression at 4 months. My EE boy is standoffish too but at almost 6 months, I can push him around if he doesn't move quickly enough out of my way and he makes no attempt whatsoever to challenge me. None. I have kids and he steers clear of them as well. As pretty as he is, if he behaved as you're describing, it would be freezer camp time (and if I couldn't do it, I'd put him on Freecycle as a free chicken dinner).

I love my EE. She is very sweet and lets me and the kids carry her around. She will lay her head on my arm and she responds when I say her name (Millie). I hate to say it but she is my favorite and I always try to give her extra treats (this is also due to she was the last one I got and still gets picked on sometimes)

ONe more suggestion. You need to take control right now or put him in the freezer. Dress up in protective clothing, long sleeves, long pants, gloves well you know. When you go into the pen if you are alone bring at least a broom to pin him down, pick him up by the feet and let his head hang down. Kneel down and pin him to the ground without doing serious damage and pull out a few of his tail feathers and hold him there fora bit. Until he is under control he is dangerous to the baby.

Better that than risk having him permanently damage or blind your baby. He would have already gone in the frying pan at my house. There are too many beautiful docile roosters out there to keep a mean one. I have never had a roo attack me, but we have eaten 1 that showed aggression toward my kids. Not worth the risk. I wouldn't bother tring to teach him you're boss, honestly. If he's attacking you, he's never going to be tame and safe. And you shouldn't have to hurt an animal to gain its respect.

You are not alone. My once calm quiet rooster who we have had since he was tiny, has started being aggressive. He only attacks the kids if they run near his girls. He has puffed up at me once when I was in the pen checking on a hen who was screaming cause I was cleaning around her vent. She had a egg break inside a nasty thing to treat. Anyway he came at me, I grabbed him and held him up by his feet for a little bit till he stopped fighting. Once he was calm I gave him to my 3 year old to hold and pet for a long time. He wasn't happy. But he knows who the boss is. As for the kids They know not to run near the hens. If they walk he doesn't attack only running gets him going. If he starts going for them if they stop he stops. The kids made a game out of it for a while. Run by then stop just in time. It was funny to watch. But, I made them stop we don't need a psycho rooster.They can ride there bikes and that won't get him running either. I like that he is a protector. I saw him run off a stray cat as well as turkeys. If a hawk flies over he stands the middle of the yard flapping his wings and crowing. The girls run for cover and he just stands there making a racket. I saw that for the first time last week. I heard a racket outside so I went to see what was going on. There is a risk of free range when you live in the country. Just as long as LaMar is agressive to everything but us I'm ok with it. He will eat out of out hands as well as all but 7 of the hens. They are new and wild. Bought them 3 weeks ago. Thet where suppose to be 1 year old. But, no one has laid an egg yet. I'm holding off for now. When I got them they where beat up with bald backs. He had 7 hens in with 64 rooster. Not a good idea. If they don't start laying soon about 4 weeks. I will have to cull. My rooster isn't even looking at them and they are healing and getting feathers back. I been putting on the feed and scrach heavy to put some meat on them. But, a non laying hen is just taking up space and feed. I would still rather thaey lay then go to the freezer. I love the green/blue eggs.
