How about barring ? Isn't there away to tell form the white spot on the head ?

And about the pea comb, I think I was using my limited experience with Ameraucans. With these also, you are right, the size of the comb is a factor also.

You can always put a white piece of paper under the hackle feathers and look to see if they are pointed or rounded not the pattern on the feather but the tip of the feather itself! with my girls it was hard to tell because their feathers looked pointed unless i put something under one of the feathers to see,in actuality it was the pattern of the feathers that made them look pointed. They are brown red but have that same pattern in there hackle feathers as your chicks. they may be still to young yet but you can try it on the saddle feathers too. if they look like they are getting longer then the others and hanging over check for points! as for barring or pattern it will be hard to tell as they are multi colored and patterns can differ from bird to bird!

I read that the stores are required to call them Ameraucanas... and they don't know any different either. Just humor them

i bought some ameraucanas from a "feed store" if they turn out to be ee , so what... i'm not gonna show them, i wanted good layers, pretty eggs a bonus and i love the hawk looking beaks

EE are not a breed and can not be shown. Ameraucana's have specific colors and standards and if your EE don't meet those standards they will be DQ sorry! If you are only going to a county fair to show you may get by with it but a REAL show you would not make it in the door. I have a pure good looking Wheaten Ameraucana Roo but not muff and beard so some would consider him and EE even though he is pure, he would be DQ if I showed him.

I am going to use him to make some pretty EE and maybe Lav Wheaten Am if I can figure that out.
