The EE braggers thread!!!

Gold is basically what makes a hen or rooster brown or white (not the kind of white that replaces black) Think of Gold Duckwing (black breasted red, rather) versus Silver Duckwing. That's gold genes vs silver genes at play there. Same goes with Partridge vs Penciled, Light Columbian vs Buff Columbian. Your black w/red leakage carries gold. The black w/white leakage carries silver.

Offspring with color other than black or lavender have leakage, yes. Lavenders with color other than Lavender have leakage, yes, however if the leakage is silver instead of gold you might not notice it. If the leakage is gold it will show up as a dirty yellowish color.

How do I create a breeding plan using the 2 brothers that are split for lav to create lav birds I have 0 hens carrying lav. Is hen base color important; I have several colors.

Your best bet would be solid black hens, especially since your boys already have color leakage. The problem is only half of their offspring will carry the Lav gene and you won't be able to tell which ones till you mate them back to the brothers. Even then only 1 in 4 of the offspring of two Lav carriers will be Lav so you will have to hatch a lot of chicks to get some Lavs.

OK. I won't try to breed for lavs specifically. I'll enjoy them if and when they do show up.Perhaps I should wait for extras from a friend working on a lav project to increase the frequency of the lav genes. I really like the EE for the variety of colors. THank you.

We have some 2 yr old and some EE hens from last spring... We love the colors and the personality of these birds. We call this one "grey lady"...she's got a darker face even though she wouldn't show it...

I believe the color is called lemon blue??? or similar anyway?

It will look like it, but Lemon Blue is a more true-breeding color based on the actual crowwing genes (birchen, brown-red) while what you'll get will have less "lemon" and won't breed true, regardless of the whole "blue doesn't breed true" bit.

But yes, they'll look quite similar, however many might look more like a normal blue birchen as the blue parent may be carrying silver as most blues do.
