The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

I think this is an excellent idea but it is getting moved down...is there a way to keep it at the top? I think would get utilized better that way. Just my two cents and I'm so glad you started it!!!

I have a two day old chick that can't walk. Its neck and head lean to one side. I am feeding it and it is drinking water. It is also pooping. Will using the vet tape around its legs help it to walk and will that help it to balance his head?

Below is a link with a short video to show what it does. I appreciate any help!

Hi. It looks like your chick might have splayed leg and possibly wry neck. I will try and find some articles on it!

poly vi sol works wonders for wry neck in my personal experience. It has to be the one without the iron. I feed 1 to 2 drops twice a day. The spraddle leg issues I have dealt with have been solved by placing the chick into a small shot glass that forces them to stand upright. I do it about 4 hrs at a time and pull them out for a few hours and put them back again. Usually within 24 to 48 hrs they are waking fine. When they are in the glass I put them into the incubator to stay warm at 92 to 95° F. Hopefully this can help some too along with the advice you have already gotten.

Thanks for the advice. I have given a morning and evening does of poli-vi-sol. The chick can balance for a second or so. Also. It is holding its head up a bit more.

I didn't really get a clear picture in my mind of how the shot glass tip works. I tried it with a slender, plastic bottle cut down shorter. He scooted right out of it.

My latest concern is whether I am feeding him too much. I scrambled an egg for him. He gobbles it down. I've been giving him about a teaspoon every few hours. His crop is full! He has pooped three or four times today. The last one was mostly clear.

How often should I feed him?

I appreciate your help so much!

I would feed him as much as he will eat. He knows when to stop.

I'll get a pic of the glass I use

Hi all,

My chick has improved. He's now walking like a drunk.

This is an improvement! I'm giving him poly-vi-sol twice daily. He's eating scrambled eggs. I'm providing him with chick crumbles, too, but he's not very interested in them.

Should I continue as I have been doing? He's 3 days old. Today is day 2 of vitamins.

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

I see you received good advice from @minihorse927

Continue to do what you have been doing. If he doesn't seem interested in the chick starter you can try wetting it - mix a little warm water with the crumbles to make a "mash". Chicks seem to love wet feed. But you can also continue with the egg as well. Whatever he will eat at this point is a good thing

I hope he continues to improve.

I agree. Keep up the poly vi sol for 7 to 10 days usually. Sometimes it takes a little longer. Feed her whatever dhe will eat. She will pick up on the chick starter. The wet neck may prevent her from successfully standing and pecking at the chick starter so she may not have the hang if it yet.
