The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Please help! I recently posted a thread about a hawk attack, and I thought all the chickens were fine. Upon further investigation, one of my chickens has medium depth punctures wounds on her left side, and shallow cuts on her right side. I dont know what to do, I've never had chickens before! Please help me, I don't want her to die. She's really young and I'm scared she won't make it.
Is this the same bird PD is helping you with? If so I agree with his advice! Good luck. They heal from some bad wounds.

Hi @Squeak61

I'm sorry to hear about your chicken. Can you post some photos of her injuries?

How old is she?
What have you done so far to take care of the wounds?
Is she lethargic, alert, eating/drinking, etc.?
How long has it been since the attack?

Usually it's best to separate a badly injured chicken so you can monitor them. Sometimes they will be in shock for a while - just offer some water - if you have them add some electrolytes for the first day or you can add a little sugar in the water.

For the wounds and cuts, flush with saline, sterile water, diluted betadine or warm soapy water - clean out any dirt/debris and if she has feathers in the way, you may need to trim them back a bit.

Apply Vetericyn or triple antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin, Bacitracin, etc) to the wounds to help them heal. Apply your ointment a couple of times a day and watch for infection - pus, odors, hot skin with redness.

You mention she is young - keep her relatively warm (75-80F). See that she is drinking well - hydration is very important. Offer her normal feed and some chopped egg to see if she will eat after she has been drinking.

Keep us posted.

She's seven weeks old, I cleaned the wounds and applied neosporin. She's currently inside with a buddy. She's lethargic, and has been eating but not drinking. And the attack happened last night at around 4, it's been about 15 hours.

:hugsShe's getting good care!
Would it help to add water to her food, for a mash to help with hydration? Most birds find this palatable(tasty).

Help! I recently got a black silkie from a man who breeds them. When we got home I noticed that it had matted feathers on its wings, which is strange because silkies feathers fly free, so they have feather fur! Also every time we touch its wings, it chirps loudly, not its usual sounds. I think it might have been in a fight when it was younger. We got it at 4-5wks old. It lives inside, since she's too little to introduce to my 4 big hens. I don't know if anything is wrong, but I'm still worried! Please help!!

You will need to examine to determine why its matted. Is there a wound?
