The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Pics
I have located a vet who sees chickens! It is about 1 1/2 hrs from me. She has an appt. tomorrow morning. Is there anything specific I should request them to do while there? I never dreamed I would be taking my chickens to a vet when I got them. But they mean the world to me and I will do whatever needs done to properly care for them.

I'm glad you found a vet, it can be really difficult to find a vet to look at chickens. Sorry I don't have any advise on what to ask for at the vet :/. I've only had to a chicken to a vet once. Good luck and I hope your hen feels better :hugs

Oh my gosh!!! One of them has tiny maggots teeming from her bottom! Like crawling everywhere! I gave her a very warm bath in Dawn and they are gone-for now. What the heck? I am thoroughly spooked.

NEW EMERGENCY

I have posted here before about my BO hen who started out with what I believed to be sour crop.

She's about 2.5 yrs old, was isolating herself from flock, wasn't eating, I moved her into a crate in the garage with heat source. Started with TwoCrows crop buster drench along with worming with Safeguard paste wormer. I also resorted to vomiting her every morning for about 4 days until all putrid contents were out of her crop. Went on to treat with miconazole along with human probiotics. She refused to eat for a while until she passed a huge rope of grass about 7 inches long and almost a half inch in diameter. After that her poop was nothing but water with little bits of grass in it. Stunk like sewer swamp. Then poop became nothing but water, cloudy white water. Increased probiotics to whole contents of capsule mixed with applesauce and force fed with syringe. Also increased miconazole to 1cc 2x a day for about 5 days. She was eating nothing but crickets, mealworms and worms, with a tiny bit of cracker and finely chopped clover. She got out of her confinement and gorged on some grass before my hubby could catch her. She wouldn't eat much for 3 days following that. Then on the fourth day, she finally pooped out the grass. Between the time that she ate the grass and when she pooped it out, she only pooped clear fluid. After the grass came out. Her poop then turned mustard yellow and watery. That lasted for about 4 days.During this time she continued to eat small amounts of crickets, worms, crackers, rolled oats, scratch, and chicken feed. But only VERY small amounts. Her poop finally became more solid, still dark green and still smells like swamp. I have now noticed that she is also passing whole rolled oats and chips of grit. It doesn't appear as though her gizzard is grinding anything up.

Right now It's been since 11/01 since shes been ill. She's still in the crate in the garage, with a heat source for warmth. She is bedded on puppy pads to absorb all of the fluid from her poop. She drinks well, and now her diet consists of crickets, worms, rolled oats, finely minced broccoli pepper brusselsprouts, crumbled dried mealworms, crumbled layer feed, grit, oyster shell, and maybe a few bits of scratch. I give her what ever she will eat. Sometimes she turns her nose up at one to two things that she ate the day before, but she goes crazy for the vegies. Oh, and I also give her probiotics and chicken vitamins in her water.

Any idea of what may be the matter with her? I thought sour crop, then it looked like a blockage. I believed that the blockage had passed, but it doesn't seem like everything is like it should be in her digestive tract. I'm going to try to attach some pics.

beginning poop

grass blockage?

cloudy white poop

First day of new formed poop on top of night before's liquidy yellow poop.

From that day until now, this is what her poop looks like, Dark, grassy, and stinky. She will pass formed poop and then the next will be diarrhea of the same color. All with bits of what she ate, undigested.

Any thoughts as to the cause of this? Or if the prognosis might be good for a full recovery? It's been 5 weeks of struggle for the both of us.

Thanks

Oh, and I also gave her penicillin injections for 3 days after she had passed the rope of grass and before the cloudy white liquid diarrhea. I thought that she might have had a clostridia infection. Nothing changed with the treatment, so I discontinued it.

Can you post some photos?

Look closely to determine exactly where they are coming from - inside or from an external wound/sore.
Keep watch and flush/wash and pick off all that you see.

I understand that you have more than one that is ill right now. If you can bring them all in so you can monitor them, that may be helpful. If you have vet care available, you may want to take in the sickest one or two so you can get a handle on things.

Keep us posted.

UPDATE: Vet diagnosed a fungal lung infection. Medicine to be made at compounding pharmacy so hopefully will get it tomorrow. They did give me 3 doses to get her started. She is still struggling with each breath she takes and her comb is looking very shriveled and purpleish. She definitely has me very concerned. I just got home from work and was amazed to find she layed an egg! And not a soft shelled egg. It is quite oblong but very hard shelled. She is a fighter. Not gonna give up on my girl.

Hi there..
So, our California White was "off" this morning. She's not eating or drinking..and not moving much. She's normallly one of our more spunky chickens. Could this be from the cold? Egg bound? We have her an epsom salt bath. No egg came out?? Help!

Three of them died. The one with maggots on her bottom had two ruptures of the vent with decal matter showing through. So I had to put her down on my own. It was awful. The other two died naturally in my arms. Two others I got to in time and are ok except for respiratory issue and have antibiotics. It was sheer hell this weekend. Every three hours I flushed them and I made an infirmary in my house and set them up by the fireplace.

I'm sorry you are having trouble.
Do you feel an egg?
How old is she?
Is she pooping - what does is look like?
Is her crop functioning properly - how does it feel?

Hydration is top priority, once she is drinking then offer food. Wet food is sometimes more palatable, you can also give hard boiled egg or tuna.
