Hi everyone. My girl started going thru a molt two weeks ago. It's only 12 degrees tonight and when I went to close up the coop I noticed she was the only one not on the roost. She jumped trying to get on it but couldn't make it up there. Help what do I do!

Yes,Mareks can not be treated there is a 10% percent chance she might survive.But she would have to go though a lot of stress/pain

I'm sorry you had to put her down.  I empathize with you, as I'm thinking this is what I'm going to have to do with my Muninn.  Our dog died this week, too.  We had him for 15 years.  Much love and peace to you!  <3

Thank you. And so sorry for your loss. Thankfully the joy our animals give definitely makes these times bearable albeit not easy.

When molting, they can sometimes have difficulty navigating the roosts.
If she were mine, I would pick her up and place her on the roost so she has a warm place to be. You may need to help her in the a.m. to get down. Make sure she is eating/drinking well. A molting chicken can also benefit from some extra protein, so offer her some egg or tuna.

I am sorry to say that I had to have my sweet Opal chicken put down. The X-rays showed the fungal infection not only in lungs but air sacs as well. The vet said I could try hospitalization and more meds and nebulizing but that would cost hundreds of dollars more and might not even work. So they are putting her down right now. Never thought I would be crying my eyes out over a chicken. I spent about $500 trying to save her to no avail. Today was another $271. Rest in peace my sweet chicken. You know you were my favorite girl since the first time I ever saw you.

Help. So. Here's background

I have a barred rock. Approx 22 weeks old. She is in a mixed flock of 6 (Meyer hatchery asst ). They have a coop with perimeter fence approx 150 ft but I let them free range every day. Fence is just morning, evening predator prevention.

For last two weeks barred rock hasn't been free ranging with the others, she stayed closer to coop. I just figured it was getting colder and she was smarter. Last night, when I put them all in fenced area (the coop has solar door so it closes automatically) I noticed she was already in coop but didn't think anything about it.

This morning I went to clean coop and she was still there. I picked her up and she didn't even move (none of my chickens like being held). I brought her into garage and set her up in temporary crate. She took two shaky steps and hasn't moved since. I tried to feed her a grape and she wouldn't take it. She does sing a little song while I'm with her - but that's it.

She seemed lighter in weight than my other chickens
She's had marek vaccination
Eating (hard to tell. But even yesterday morning she went for their treats)
Pooping. Haven't seen any since I brought her into house (45 min ago) not sure which is hers in pen. But there was a runny yellow looking one (almost like dried egg color) in the coop - but could have been any.

I'm trying to find chicken vet in area. I know it could be respiratory but I can't get her to eat or drink so I'm not sure how I can even get her medicine.

What about the flock - they all look good now.....

Oh, and none of my pullers are laying yet.

Thanks, Kathy! Not sure if you saw my original post, as I'm unsure how to reply from that, but there aren't any avian vets around us, I've already searched. Out vet used to be it out here, but he retired and is on a mission in Haiti.

Oddly, Muninn seems to be improving this morning, so I'm guessing Marek's does this.
