The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Thanks Wyorp! I was just going to write you. We lost her last night. I did everything I could and hubby said it looked like it was peaceful; she just went to sleep. I was talking with TwoCrows too; thank you for all your help.

New Emergancy
She is a golden laced wyendotte and is 3 years old, and is pretty big.
She is lethargic and can't seem to stay awake. She won't eat, and we checked for her being eggbound but found nothing when we felt inside.
She's been like this for about two days
No other chickens are having these symptomoes.
There are no signs of trauma
I don't think anything has happened.
She hasn't been eatingor drinking but when I feel her crop she must have taken a few drinks.
She has runny poop.
We've set her in warm water just incase she was eggbound, have given her electrolytes and Nutruidrench.
I need help stabalizing the bird, but we do have a vet available.
They have a very large coup with a sandy ground.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry that you did't get an answer earlier, but it helps sometimes to get answers if you start a new thread of your own at the top of the page. For now, I would look at internal laying or egg yolk peritonitis as a possible illness, since those symptoms are common in older hens with those problems. Trying to get her to eat feed mixed wirh water and plain yogurt, and chopped egg may get some calories into her. Water is really important. Antibiotics from your vet may help prolong the life in EYP, but it won't cure the disease. I will look for your new thread.

There is a possibility my hens ate some rat poison, the high winds blew it on the ground. We used a shop vac to suck it up, but there is a chance they ate or pecked at it.
I read to give them vitamin K, but I don't know how to administer it to them or how much.
Please help

Welcome To BYC

Can you consult a vet?
You also may want to call poison control or if you have the package of rat poison there should be a phone number on it.

As for dosage of Vitamin K hopefully someone can chime in with the proper amount. Some Vitamin K rich foods are Wheat germ oil, fish liver oil, alfalfa meal, greens, germinated pulses, soybean oil, grains and fish meals. You may also be able to find a poultry vitamin that contains K.
