The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I mailed an item to someone in Florida on Thursday. I live in extreme N. GA. So, the expected delivery date is Monday. Well, the tracking on that padded envelope today, which I sent priority for the $50 insurance that is included, says the pkg just left, of all the bizarre places, NEWARK, NJ at 3 a.m.! WTH? Someone put that on the wrong truck, looks like. I put extra padding in the padded envelope around the item and guess it's a good thing since it's going around the world to get back to Florida! I could tell you stories from when I used to mail boxes of hatching eggs all over the country, and some of you probably heard those. Good grief.

***on another note, another item I mailed to another person from NC to her *in* NC went to SC, then back to NC, LOL, (l live a mile from the NC line). No wonder the P.O. is always whining about losing money! ***

As someone said, "You had ONE JOB......!"

When my girls were little, they went to a Christian school up the road, about 2 miles. The pastor of the church lived 3 doors down from us, and his daughter attended the same school. Every month they would mail the statement, and I'd pay them the next day, when I dropped the girls off to school. This had been going on for a couple years. One month, the secretary met me at the classroom, and asked if I was dissatisfied with the school, having financial trouble, or going to put the girls in a different school. I told her things were fine. What was up with the questions? She explained that I had not paid for the month. I went to the office, asked what I owed, and wrote a check. I assured her I had not gotten a bill, or I would have paid it. She told me she had heard that from several other parents too.

A few days later, the pastor saw me in the yard, and stopped. He asked me if I had gotten that month's bill from the school. I explained I had not, but I did pay. He told me he didn't get a bill either.

Fast forward 2 months. The bill arrived. It had been to Hawaii, Ohio, Texas, New York, etc. It had been bouncing around the country, and had the cancellation stamps to prove it. I took it into the office, to show them. They told me I was about the 10th person that morning that had brought one in, and for whatever reason, the entire batch of statements they had mailed, had all bounced around the country like mine did, starting with Hawaii. No one could explain why, since the zip code was plainly on it.

I mailed my rent check to my landlord once, he lives over on Mackinac Island 3 miles across the water from here. A week later he called and asked when I was moving, as I obviously did not want to rent from him anymore as he did not get a check (he is kind of a grump). I assured him that I did, and would send another check. 3 weeks later he saw me in the hardware store and handed my my first check - unopened with a postmark from 2 weeks before the rent due date. No apology, but never had any more trouble with him either.

I went into town today to Home Depot. I didn't like their selection of toilet seats, so I'll be checking Lowes next. I may have to order what I want. Anyway, the door handle on the back door has been giving problems for a little while now. I got a new one. The toilet in my bathroom needed a new flush handle and rod. I got that. I came home, and asked Dh to put the door handle on. He balked. No biggie. I put the new one on myself. I didn't even ask him to put the part on my toilet. I did that myself too.

The kids wanted to camp out tonight. They got new sleeping bags for Christmas, and wanted to try them out. It rained yesterday, and the night temps dropped. It was only going down to 50 tonight, but 50 degrees on wet ground is cold. I suggested that Dh get a couple of the 3/4 inch plywood panels from the storage shed, and put them down on the ground to help insulate from the cold. Nope. We have a lot of empty cardboard boxes that we used to move in, that we removed all the tape, and returned to their flat state. I suggested we take some of them, and put on the floor inside the tent, under the sleeping bags. That's a good way to insulate the floor too. Nope. My daughter informed me the sleeping bags were designed for temps down to -30 degrees, so they would be fine.

Am I the only one that's ever camped out in a tent? I tried telling them that cold dry ground, and cold damp ground are NOT the same thing, and I had my doubts about them being warm enough. The kids headed off to sleep in the tent. 3 hours later, they woke up, and came inside. They were cold. Dh, and Dd took down the tent, wiped it down good with a couple clean towels, and set the tent back up in my breakfast nook. The kids are happily sleeping away in it now. I was able to resist the urge to say "I told you so".

No one listens to Mom, do they, Cheryl?

Coyotes were insane last night. Sounded like a good size pack close by. Every dog in this part of the county was barking, yotes were going nuts, just went on and on, got quiet, then started up again. Makes me crazy that people leave small dogs outside at night. A pack will make a nice snack of those dogs. Or any dog that is chained out and cannot defend itself. Idiots.
