The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

One problem is the previous owners would shoot birds inside the shed, so lots of holes. We also get -40 degree wind chills in the winter, so every crack and hope in the tin was made worse, plus my husband apparently likes more work.

I can't complain as it's a huge improvement. We are adding more windows and making the big sliding doors smaller, and adding a sliding door to the donkey opening so we can lock out birds in the fall, otherwise hundreds of starlings and sparrows are in there.

Sounds like a great plan to me! We bought our house from an estate. One of what I call the Three Sisters, three huge oak trees in a triangle formation in the chicken pen, has a huge scar on her from the man who lived her shooting into her trunk while target practicing, as well as shooting crows from the deck, we were told. I was afraid it would permanently damage the tree, but she seems to have healed up nicely. With all the crazy yahoos who seem to shoot around here as the sun is going down or in pitch black darkness, I'm almost expecting someone to shoot through one of our buildings. I'm hoping when that happens, the idiot doesn't take out one of my birds or I'll be on the warpath.

I though we were the only ones surrounded by shooting idiots, oops, neighbors. It gets bad here in the fall. Your poor old tree, I'm sure it's happy to have you as the owners now.
Oh, yes, idiots abound. We ourselves came close to taking a bullet from the moron down the mountain who was shooting at squirrels with a .22. We were standing on one side of our former garden, which is in front of where the barn is now, and discussing something when PING!, a bullet bounced off one of the steel u-posts on the opposite side of the garden from where we were standing. It traveled up through the woods and hit 20' from us. So, I cringe when morons begin shooting and it's so dark, they can't possibly even see. Target practice takes place in daylight. If you're shooting at a predator, you don't usually fire off 10-15 rounds in the dark.

I truly want this sign on our land, besides the "This property patrolled by wild boar".

And maybe this one, which stands for us, being Bacons.

Your shed is bigger than our barn!! Looks good! It will be super nice once it is all done.

We re-roofed our barn shortly after we moved in. It had half of a 70' pine tree laying over it for the last ten years or so. We'll eventually end up tearing it down and rebuilding. Sadly, it was not built well, and built with wood directly on the ground. It would be more work to jack it up, pour footers, and replace all the rotten wood than it would be to rebuild. Sad, really. It does its job now though, storing all our hay for our calves, heifer and horse as well as all our lumber (we hoard lumber here...) and has a nice sized run in for the horse and heifer. We'll be converting that area to stalls for our bottle calves when they arrive the end of the month.

Bleh to crazy people... seems like we have our own share here and about every place we have lived before as well!! Trees are amazing, though, with what they can recover from!

I am blessed to have a 40x40 shed all to myself. It has been nice. I also have a separate bantam coop in the backside of the barn and a separate turkey shed.

My husband hoards lumber too.

Love the signs, unfortunately stupid doesn't recognize itself.

Haha, I said exactly the same thing to Tom yesterday! The stupidity I see in folks today really is clueless about how really lacking they are. Some is ignorance, but honestly, what these folks do with the knowledge they have is astounding. It's like rational thought has completely left the building. So yeah, they'd be coming up here, asking, "What's with the sign?"

My son is all lined up for heading to Ireland. I asked if he's excited to get there and asked about his roommate, Killian. Here is what he said:

I'm itching to go to Ireland. Work is dragging me down behind belief. I'm getting ready to leave. I just need to sell off a few things and cancel some accounts here. I paid my tuition, I have an apartment waiting, student health insurance, extra cash in hand, an appointment for my student visa, and everything else is coming together better than I had expected at the moment. (Is Murphy's Law waiting being the next step?)

Killian is a 6'4" skinny 130 lb Physics PhD brain on stilts, but he seems cool. He was very nice and helpful. I think we'll get along well despite me being at least a decade older.
