The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Keep pondering the house situation, something will eventually feel right.

Never lend money to anyone and expect it back, especially family. I watch enough Judge Judy's. :hmm

I really didn't expect the first money back, though a person can hope. Yea for JJ! She cuts through the bull!

Pretty little lot!

I have a "problem" with the term "hoarding" when it comes to having a food larder. It really concerns me that the young people at this time in our history are using the word "hoarder" to shame people who have grown, harvested and stored their harvest to last the year ..or those that purchase food to be responsible and have a year's storage.

What was considered responsible behavior is now being shamed. I fear that viewpoint / perspective will come back to bite some folks in the butt at a time that it could be too late.

Okay. Off my soap box for now.

PS: If you build, would it be possible to rent one of the houses - or even use it as a "vacation rental" through something like vrbo? VRBO screens people really well and all the payment goes through them. If you do the short-term vacation rental route, you often make more on rent over a year than you would if it was rented out for a regular housing situation.

Your job - or maybe you could hire a local young person - would be to have it clean and ready for the guests.

I agree with you completely! It is responsible. "Hoarding" has a negative connotation and the media and government sway public opinion by their terminology.

That did enter my mind, believe it or not. I haven't brought it up to my husband, but it's a distinct possibility. Thank you for the suggestion!

I am sorry to hear about your son. My sister and her husband own a restaurant in Dallas, and she has always told me the business is brutal.

While I understand your interest in the extra lot, I still think you should consider moving somewhere closer to medical services. And as said quite well before, aging brings lots of unpleasant changes, and reducing the workload can add immeasurably to the quality of your life.

Hola Cyn. Haven't been in any threads except the local one lately. Too busy this time on year. As summer ends I will be reading a little more and am making this thread a priority!

Sorry to hear about your son losing his job. I hope it actually works out for the best. Did you know that having more than a week's worth of food can get you put on a terrorist watch list? So I guess all of Florida is on a watch list. Even the media warns to have at least a 2 week supply of food, water, medications, batteries, candles, cooking fuel, etc. due to hurricanes.

Can't afford to move closer--houses down there are more expensive, not easy at all to find anything with more than one acre and harder still to find them unrestricted so I can have chickens. But, when DH turns 65 in February, he can get a doctor in this town who takes Medicare and his Tricare for Life kicks in as secondary. Me, I'll have to continue going to our doctor an hour south of us until I'm 65 because I'll still be on Tricare Prime, but in just over four years, I can get a doctor closer, too. There are doctors here, but it's the government messing with our military healthcare insurance that was making us have to go down to Jasper for a doctor.

Hey, Isaiah! Look forward to seeing you more.

I know, it's ridiculous. That makes anyone who is prepared a terrorist. Stupidity at its finest. The gov't wants you dependent on them. That way, you're controllable.

To show you what I'm up against, here is literally all I get when I search Jasper, where our dr is, with a 1 mile radius from there, 4 properties. That's it, four. The search was 2+ bd, 2+ baths, 2 acres minimum.

*this one is a mobile home built around, so no way*

Though pretty nice, this one is very hilly property, no fireplace at all so woodstove installation is a $3-4K project at least, plus you see steps to get in, no outbuildings either, not sure but may have covenants, too, as most in this area do. Would have to see it from Google Earth to see if it has any usable land at all. PLUS, it's in a subdivision, so probably covenants are in place.

This is a fixer upper, no way we can do that, but they have one photo only. I hate old brick houses, personally.

The last one is disgusting and about 20 ft from a neighbor on the left (tricky photography), a jungle with some old trashy mobile home in the weeds, which may or may not be on the property.

If I change it to 10 mile radius, I get only two more houses.

This first one is NOT 10 miles from Jasper, not sure how they get that, it's further, I think. It's in a more expensive area, too, very crowded and upscale. And you see the sketchy description and lack of photos? As a former realtor, I hate that-he/she was just phoning it in. I know how to do that job and this realtor fell down on the job.

This next one is a MAJOR fixer upper on good acreage, though it's been on the market for literally forEVER.Plus, I don't like that area, seems very run down all over, sort of depressing.

Regarding having more than a week's worth of food....

There are certain things that I only purchase with cash.

One thing that history shows over and over and over is that those that are accused of being criminals or mentally unstable can change based on the "beliefs" at the time. So if the young people are being "trained" to believe that people that have a larder are "hoarders" or have some kind of mental disability, then those people need "help".

I can give lots of historical examples that are absolutely unbelievable regarding innocent, good, hard-working people that were criminalized and lost their freedoms or worse.
