The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

@speckledhen
Did your pecked hen end up blind in that eye?

On the bantams, since it's a former customer I'd say it's a good gamble to keep them for her. If she wasn't a known character, I'd be worried about them backing out at the last minute!

Yeah, I do not hold birds for strangers, no way. I know she's been battling cancer and had surgery. She may be able to get someone else to bring her to get them before July 3. She did that last time when she got two cockerels and some hatching eggs from me, brought a 4H leader. She takes good care of them, too, it seems like, is concerned with their protein levels, etc. That makes it easier as well.

Oh, the hen, I don't think she was blind it that eye. She did not appear to be, at least in her younger years. The pupil looked normal just set back in the socket.

Why do some folks just seem to want to criticize and lecture me on stuff I know as much or more about than they do? I swear, we have some cantankerous old nasties in this world (and on this forum). Someone was discussing oyster shell and said birds that don't need it are eating it, or something like that. I said even my roosters will eat oyster shell and they certainly don't need it. Some curmudgeon many of you know said maybe my roosters are lacking, that they are searching for grit. I say no way, we live on a mountain covered in "grit", that they get plenty of grit, plus their 13 grain mix also has granite grit in it as well. So, I get literally lectured and then, insulted, really, accusing me of just trying to "get buy" (yes, he used the wrong word there). What is wrong with people? I really don't like these backhanded insults they like to hand out, holding themselves out to be experts. You know I am the last person to just "get by" with my birds, sheesh. Some people live to be nasty. This person has answered my reply and I will not engage, will not engage, will not engage......geez. It's like there are certain folks on the forum that look for my posts so they can disagree with me or lecture me and try to make me look like an idiot to their minions. You see why I rarely go outside my own threads anymore.

Sheesh, some people! You know, my drakes will eat oyster shell occasionally. It's not like only hens ever need calcium. Males have calcium needs too, just not as much as the females.

Reminds me of something that happened to me two days ago. I was on a thread helping with a duckling hatch. The very first post was the OP having opened the eggs prematurely thinking they needed help. I jumped in to help salvage things, told them that ducklings take a really long time to hatch (literally the first thing I said to them) and that they went in much too soon. I said that on my own eggs (because I hatch Calls, which have a very hard time hatching on their own if they are show stock, which mine are) I will put a tiny safety hole in the air cell if after 24 hours from internal pip they haven't externally pipped. What I would not do is what the OP did and take a huge chunk of shell over the air cell off.

Someone else came in, told the OP that they assisted too fast (very helpful, thanks) but kept saying she was TOLD to assist too fast...except the first post was her already having started opening the eggs? And no one told her to? But when I said that, the member's response was pretty much just "she was told to put a hole in the egg, I can read too".

I know the member you are talking about. She has a good heart, and means well but she sometimes isn't good at responding, and can get a bit defensive due to some past bullying. She tries to help but sometimes goes off track, and gets misunderstood.

For some of us it's harder to communicate solely through writing without being able to see people and how they are responding.

Sometimes I see an underlying cruelty on this site which some cannot handle, and they end up leaving. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not.

I feel bad because I was not trying to argue, at all. In fact I wasn't even responding to her posts until she kept quoting my posts and implying over and over I had told the OP to open the eggs early (which I had not), or quoting my posts to argue specifically with something I said that was a reply to other people. There was no need for any of what occurred. All I wanted to do was help the OP save her ducklings :(

Which made it, by the way :) Last update she had four out, happy and healthy.

That member can be a firecracker when riled up. It's one of her faults. :hmm She used to drive me bananas before I got to know her more.

I'm glad you helped the op get live ducklings. That's definitely the main concern. :thumbsup

Yep, that was my main goal! Actually, I should definitely go ask the OP for updates on how the rest are doing :)

Here are the rest of the babies...

6 Dominiques (I seemed to have missed one in the photo shoot)

Cute chicks!

Cyn, that would be such a blessing. I have passed on young birds for 4-H and it is very satisfying.

Pyxis, sometimes the results make the rocky road work it. Still... :hmm

She could still change her mind about taking all of these. She asked about them being from another bloodline. I told her that most of the time, you don't add another bloodline this soon in the game, that it can bring nasty surprises like the dwarf gene. So, we'll see if she follows through. No one else is stepping up to take them anyway.
