The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

You deserve getting a good surprise now and then. It was fun anticipating and waiting!
I loved it! Such a lovely surprise, thank you again, Karen. I'm planning my next project around the fabrics.

Did you get a visit from Chip and Joanna or Christine and Tarek??? :gig

Haha, I love that show! They crack me up, especially now that they've divorced. I'm about to do a backsplash in my kitchen and they inspire me to do stuff, though I have slightly different taste than Christina. Her urban style would not look right in my little cottagey-cabin.

Unexpected expense...the CRV would not start, replaced the battery, which was newer. No dice. Seems the alternator was frozen and burned up the belt. Had to have it towed to a local shop. So, $75 towing, plus $379 later, it's back home.

I cut up some herbs from the garden for the "chicken children" yesterday and today. (7.5 weeks old) They don't have a good protected place (from the adult hens) to be in the grass so I like to give them some fresh greens and herbs from time to time.

Mountain Mint, Oregano, Thyme, Chives, Bee Balm, Sage

Let's send the big orpie to see what's in there.

That's pretty cool. I didn't expect they would eat it up. :) Of course I have no clue what mine are eating out in the fields.

Mine generally won't eat herbs other than parsley.

Oh, Jane and Maddie are about to turn 16 weeks old and soon to be intro'd to Hector without a fence between them. Prepare for fireworks!

As you can see, Jane is bulkier with a rounder chest than Maddie and generally appears more mature. Both have nice barring, better than their mother's, I think.

Those are very beautiful birds!

I hope Hector takes to them. They sure are pretty, and that would give you some good chicks.

I hope so. Ultimately, I hope to have only Hector and Bash and their hens here, plus the few who are too frail to be with a rooster. Atlas has passed 4 years old and I can't see him being around more than another year or two at the most, from my past experience with my BR males, but then again, grandpa Isaac lived to be over 6 1/2 yrs old so who knows? I don't think Atlas will live that long because he began having joint issues way before Isaac did. And whoever goes first, Hector or Bash, I won't be replacing that one. That will probably determine which breed stays here. But, plans could change. They usually do, depending on circumstance at the time. I tend to think it may be better to keep the Rocks, but hard to say for sure now.
