The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Just read through this entire thread. Atlas is just gorgeous! I loved watching him grow from hatchling to adult.

Thank you! And thanks for joining in the thread, too. It's always amazing to me to watch a rooster, especially, more so than a hen, develop from a chick into this massive creature with flowing sickles and those awesome saddle feathers. And when he turns out to be a good natured fellow, even after a couple of false starts as a youngster, it makes it even better.

Me too, I like to think we all talked Speckled Hen into keeping Atlas. I know when he acted up, I felt like such a failure .

Never a failure. I'm still not sure where Atlas will end up but thankfully, at this point, if he leaves our place, it won't be for the stew pot because of bad behavior. He's been good as gold. I make sure to handle him or at least touch/pet him at least once a day.

Just look at that beautiful tail! And broad back. He also has what we call in horses a good eye ( meaning kind). Love the cock-a-doodle shot.

Wondered if you guys got snowed in - we had a hard cold snap, waterers all froze up, and a quarter inch of ice in the big water trough.

No, just some flurries, some sticking on ramps and the tops of the vehicles, dusting on the roof, nothing except high winds and cold.

I know what you mean about the eye. I keep looking at his eyes. I know the expression when it changes to that hard and cold "you just wait, you won't see me coming" threatening look. He has very kind eyes like his dad and grandpa Isaac.

That tail, that one long sickle feather just sticks out making it look like it arches higher than it actually does. Still needs to fill in fully, but definitely it's not the squirrel tail that his Uncle Indy had. I love his nice 5 point comb. Hope he doesn't lose the ends of it this winter.

Speaking of the cock-a-doodle shot, I didn't load up this one from today:

Looks like he is posing for you in those pictures and so proud. Thank you....love seeing pictures of your chickens. Love the one where he is in the edge of the hen picture..."Whoa, you forgot me".
