The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Pretty!

I am sure the days getting shorter has a lot to do with Lizzie's tardiness.

Now that Isaac has passed on and Deacon has six hens, albeit no young ones (Maretta is the youngest at 4 1/2 yrs old), he's not in desperate need of more like he was when he had only Rita. I didn't think at first that Tessa would have the nice barring that she does and since Atlas's hens are getting older, too, might be prudent to give Tessa to him instead. On the other hand, I'm not really breeding so it doesn't much matter, I suppose. If I did need to hatch and she was laying, though, it would be better if she was with a proper BR male. I cannot reproduce Deacon because of his dwarf gene he got from his Delaware side so his hens are layers only.

The original three Stukel hens will be 5 years old in April and Druscilla is less than a year behind them. Frankly, I'm not sure if she's ever laid an egg. I've never seen an egg I could point to as definitely hers, though she must have laid one sometime. Other than those, Atlas has only Lizzie and possibly Tessa. My splash Rock, Gloria Jean, is with him but she hasn't laid in ages and I doubt she ever will again after her extended bout of bloat.

Well, maybe a little bit, after he got over being scared of them. Still, June won't have a thing to do with him and Maretta is almost as bad (the two EEs, who were Isaac's favorites, even over Georgie, his own Delaware hen). But, yeah, Deacon is king of his own domain, though it's an aging one. I will need to get some new blood as soon as my new building is functioning so he will probably get a new gal or two from that batch.

Here is Deacon today, free ranging under my watchful eye so he doesn't go to Atlas's pen to fight. He was actually very good. His hens are not laying because they are molting, yet again; either that, or just not laying again, post-molt.

Finally getting caught up with Atlas and the gang and you are right that spur is a doozy!

On another topic, Cyn, was Suede a Blue Rock or a Blue Orp? We have a the most precious 15 week old Blue Orp roo and when I was loving on him this morning he made me think of your sweet Suede.

Suede was a 14 lb Blue Orpington, Angela. If you have a Suede copy, you have a keeper.

Gosh, I will be keeping my fingers crossed that he is a copy of Suede! I would love to be that lucky!! I just weighed "Boyd" (I named this group of chicks after the characters on Justified :) ) and he weighs 5.5lbs at 15 weeks. I am hoping he is on track to be a big ole boy. I keep bracing myself for that aggressive behavior that normally accompanies their testosterone surge but so far there has not been one iota of aggressive behavior toward me but he has challenged our little bantam roo Little Man. Little Man won the first round. Lol! Speaking of Little Man, your prediction about him is coming true I am afraid as his health is finally failing. It has been declining bit by bit over the past few weeks. I am thankful that we were able to give him a good home for 13 months and that he gave me my first experience with a sweet rooster.

Here is a pic of my sweet little blue boy, Boyd.

Oh, I loved the fall pics you posted. I am soooo jealous!
