The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I hope you don't have any more join the broody brigade!

What happened with Atlas's leg? It's sad to hear he is in pain. Hope the wide roosts help him out.
I'm not sure. I think he may have injured it when he tried to mate one of his hens in a bad position and in her struggling and him trying to hang onto her (he's very insistent sometimes), he may have sprained the leg. She was found in pain, panting on her roost and I separated her, not knowing if she had internal injuries or had a stroke. It was Dottie, the story is here in the thread from a couple months ago. Dottie recovered, or so I thought, was acting normally, then had a relapse and passed away.
He began limping at that same first episode with Dottie, flexing his leg out like it was stiff. He acts like he has arthritis in that hock joint just like my late Isaac did, his grandsire. I honestly am not sure what the problem is, injury or insufficiency in the joint, but he still manages to fertilize the eggs so far.

ETA: Windows in the barn are taped over and ready for paint tomorrow, yea! When the temps get up to 50* today, I will be painting some of the roosts/nests with those little jar samples to make our other paint go farther on walls/floors. DH reminded me that when we painted our house, which is about 34' square, it only took one gallon to cover one entire side and it's lap-sided, so takes more than covering a flat surface. I think we may have enough already to do the job.

I brush painted all the roosts today and the nests that are installed ones. Oh, my aching back! Tomorrow, we spray, yea! I hate brush painting OSB. Takes way too much paint, but I had a good bit of that sunny yellow left over from my house (was supposed to be a gold-yellow, not a in-your-face midday sunstroke yellow) so I'll be depending on the greens of the walls/floors to tone it down. It's not the worst yellow, seen worse, but still, not a big fan of yellow. Off to see what I can scrounge up for supper and put a rice bag on my poor stiffening back.

Any chicks yet!?

At least one was pipped awhile ago, several in the air cells, cheeping from the eggs. I hate to keep bothering her, but I have to check on this gal every hour on the hour. The incubator is on and ready, just in case....

Did you read about this stunt that Atlas pulled on me yesterday? https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-barn-build-occupied-3-6-16/640#post_16661768

ETA: I removed 6 of the eggs from Wynette and put them in the bator, may take the other two. I want to hatch them myself, then introduce them to her and see how she does. She was acting hostile, not clucking, just screechy growling when she'd feel movement underneath her. The first one that pipped didn't go much further and the membrane appears dry in the hole, no sound or movement, so I believe that one is gone. She may have clamped down hard when it was moving, not sure what happened. Others are cheeping and in the air cell. We're now going into Day 21.

Does not sound like she is nearly as interested in chicks as she is in eggs. Maybe she thinks the chicks are egg-eating predators.

She killed the first one that other time like an alien invader and thankfully, Dottie was also broody, albeit, two weeks behind. So, I shoved the pipped and hatching eggs under Dottie She hatched them for me, but she knew it was too early and did not want to take care of them. She just ignored them, basically. That was a couple of years ago. If Wynette doesn't get it this time, she never will. At 5 years old, she probably won't go broody again after this.

I went out and got another egg and left her with only one of Tessa's. That chick is now in the air cell. I'm debating taking a chance on even that one, but maybe one will hatch in the house here first and I can test her before that one of Tessa's gets to hatch time.

I really didn't want to brood chicks, but I may have to. Ida is on hers, too, another unproven broody. She may do fine. I don't see too many like Wynette.
