The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Well, there is one more chick. Tessa's didn't make it, was just not right and did not hatch.

This second baby of Ida's was crammed into the egg so tightly, the right leg was tucked way up against the body and the toes were slightly curled inward. It has quite a bit of dark on the leg fronts, so I was very bummed that it is a pullet and we might have to put her down, but DH taped her toes flat and she is taking steps and actually standing, though she is still wobbly on the right hock joint. Later today, if she continues to improve, she will go out with her mother. Ida is her real mom, just like the other one. Seems Ida produces equally male and female chicks since Atlas is her son and Tessa is also hers.

She's with her mama now, yea! She was walking much, much better. Ida was a little confused as to where she came from, but she groomed her a bit (dried sticky stuff on her back) and picked at the foot bandage. The siblings went beak to beak to say hi and now, both are under mama Ida.

Glad she is doing good! I cant wait to see what she grows to be! Have any of Tessa's eggs ever hatched? I dont remember reading about a Tessa baby but I could have forgotten...

And our milk cow Lady's bag is getting quite full! Her teets aren't really wrinkley anymore so they are filled up. I think she might calf this weekend which is great!!

Yes, one of the chicks with Wynette belongs to Tessa. One belongs to Ida and I am not sure who the other two belong to. Druscilla is currently laying so one could have been hers, but I rather doubt it. I see that her eggs are very round and smallish and I may not have chosen one that small to go into the batch. I try to pick hatching eggs where there will be enough room for a chick to grow properly.

Exciting about Lady! It does sound like she's really close to calving.

I cant wait to see how Tessa's baby grows and how nice the barring will be!

Yep I am super excited. Her teets were wrinkley two days ago and when I walked out to look yesterday BOOM a filled up bag and teets! So shes a faster bagger upper! Lol

I honestly can't say which one belongs to Tessa, just know that one of hers did hatch. If I recall, it had the least amount of dark on the legs, but I haven't been able to really look that closely since it got with Wynette.

Ida's little one is doing great! The "boot" came off today and she is running around like a hoodlum. I'm so relieved! DH is depressed enough with his back troubles and he hates when we have to euthanize a bird, even a chick for a good reason.

Atlas, Lizzie and Gloria Jean. You can see the side of his neck where a couple of bad girls have plucked him bare (DRUSCILLA! LIZZIE!). Then, the little ones with Ida. The one in front is the one with the formerly bad leg/toes. She's completely fine as far as I can tell now. I think this is a pair with Ida, or that's my gut feeling/first impression.

They look good!! Those darn girls think Atlas is so beautiful they r trying to pull his feathers so they get more attention!!lol
