The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

You're probably right! He's way too patient with them, just like his grandpa, Isaac, and his dad, Rex. Evil, nitpicking women.

They love his long flow hackles! They probably are in the process of making a wig out of them as we speak!

Chick pics today. I think Wynette's could be three males and one pullet. One is definitely a pullet, different barring, tail and shoulder feathers coming in already. One other one has pretty even wing feathers, but no tail. That one still could be a pullet. My husband about a week ago said he thought it might be 3/1, too, so maybe. See what you think. They're two weeks old. You'll see little miss in there clearly. There is one prominent bar near the outer edge of the wing, a very pullet trait, even in hatchery stock. They all have at least some dark on the leg fronts, a couple less than the others, but still some.

And Ida's. I see some poop stuck, wasn't earlier, will go back out to check that little gal's bum in a minute.

And some of Deacon's girls, which are also old girls, except Maretta, the smaller EE hen. She is 5 years old, the baby in that group. The blue Rocks and Rita are 6 years old, Georgie the Delaware is 7 years old and June, the big EE hen, is 8 years old.

Also, check the close up of Neela, one of the blue Rocks. She has a growth that has been enlarging out of her left nare. A year or more ago, I thought she had oats or a corn kernel stuck up there and tried to pull it and it started to bleed, which is when I realized it was a growth of some sort. Now, it blocks that side of her nasal passage. She also has one of those odd bum cysts like my other Dellie hen, Ellie, did. I think it's Neela, not Alice, that has one, been awhile since I checked on it.

First, Tiny in the Old Hens' section before I go to the other group. She's still alive, in spite of almost having her scrawny neck wrung on at least ten occasions. She's 6 yrs old now, will probably live to be 20. Yes, her nails are very long. I trim them periodically, but they grow really fast because she does not scratch around much like most chickens to keep them trimmed-part of her bad eyesight. Why scratch when you can't see to hunt for anything, right?

Georgie, Maretta, Alice

Rita under the roost, Georgie, June and Alice.

ETA: On the way to the barn, I snapped a couple pics, one today, one a couple days ago. Just love these. The deer won't eat them, thankfully.

The first one is the Salome daffodil. The others are assorted varieties. And the tree is my Moonglow pear tree.

Oh.... Spring. Heavenly. Probably be here in a month.

That picture of all 4 heading away looks very much like 3-1
Yes, it does. Yet, if you go only by head spots, it's 2/2 and the pullet would be a cockerel and one of the cockerels would be a pullet, LOL. That's why this line is not so easy to sex. But, as I always say, the 'wait and see' method works every time (except with Silkies-those aliens can't be sexed reliably, ever! LOL).
